2016 Quinta do Mourao (S. Leonardo)

Post by winesecretary »

Pop and decant and pour. Given 20 minutes.

99% opaque red juice.

Violets, red Concord grape juice, esteva, chocolate on the nose.

Full rich sweet mouthfeel first. Wash of roasted South African plums next, the skins prominent. Mid palate, late palate, and finish really savoury and meaty, dominated by tannins, tobacco rather than chocolate, with some cassia bark and star anise and treacle late. (Rather attractively) like slow cooked pork belly with a five spice rub.

This is really rather impressive port with a long future. A big step above their 2017, on which I wrote a note recently, in terms of structure and seriousness. Somewhere around 2046 this is going to be very nice indeed.
