1987 Taylor Vargellas

Post by winesecretary »

The 1980s thread having been bugging me a bit I thought I would give this one another run out.

An attractive full deep garnet at the rim.

This is very nice port. But.

Mercifully cool blue fruit on the nose, lacking that Taylor hotness.

I think the palate lacks a bit of confidence. Almost but not quite great. Lovely ripe red fruit and cinnamon. But.

Finish is lush. But. Doesn't have the balance that we crave. If you swish it through the gums you get heat but not tannins.

It's very nice wine. But. A teensy bit obvious.

I really want to like it. Not least because I paid quite big money for this half case. But. I don't quite get the fuss about it.

I think it is a remarkable wine for a minor vintage. It would hold up well against all but the three or four top 1991s. But it is no Fonseca 1985 or Taylor 1992. Or Graham 85.

Hmm. For a port with which I am slightly disappointed I seem to have consumed this bottle remarkably quickly.
