86 and 02 decanted - both looking good and both corks extracted in one piece, so no jail time demanded..

Don’t rush me! I’m nearly ready to vote for Wine of the Night!

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate having a proper tasting to welcome me back home after a day working in the warehouse prepping for the BFT.

Just in case it’s relevant, my votes are 3 points to 1995 and 1.5 points to each of 1987 and 2002.

No-one’s yet posted the WotN sheet from last night. I have no idea how my scores compare to those of the attendees.

Someone put me out of my misery — please?

Typically eccentric and the only points given for the 95

I can only put it down to:
(a) the 1 day of additional development the wines had before I tasted them; and
(b) my magnificent and infallible palate; and
(c) that I had to rush my tasting notes so as not to delay everyone.

Seriously though, there was only one of those vintages which prompted me to look at Wine Searcher to see if any was available.

Phil kindly provided me with a copy of the voting sheet.

I acknowledge that perhaps I was it wholly aligned to the majority view, but hey.

On reflection, I can only conclude that the 1995 was woefully under decanted last night.

I have also had the opportunity after finishing all my samples (for which I am exceedingly grateful) to move on to make a direct comparison of thw WC samples against a Croft 2004 LBV. Croft pales in the comparison, being shown to be thin, acidic and harsh.

And it’s not a bad Port! One which I have enjoyed and am enjoying. I guess this is the difference between a proper Vintage Port and a newly opened LBV.

I've created tasting notes for each of the Cavadinhas tasted at this vertical. Please do bear in mind that my notes are based on samples I tasted 24 hours after the main event, so my wines will have had the "benefit" of an additional 24 hours exposure to air. Perhaps others who were at the tasting might be willing and able to add their notes to the threads I have created to show my views were not always aligned with the majority?

the 1984 was one of the worst ports that i have ever had. i think that there was an issue with the bottle, not TCA but maybe something else.

Well, it was a shame you couldn’t make it to the tasting, but maybe your bottle wasn’t missed!
