which are the biggest quintas?

Post by Camille80 »

Hello

Is it possible to know which are the biggest quintas (or estates) in terms of surface?

Thank you.

I believe that the largest quinta, at least in terms of cultivated land, is Quinta das Carvalhas.

Vesuvio is pretty big. 137 hectares planted.

Carvalhas, Vesuvio, Vargellas, and Vale Meao are all quite large. But as I posted on FTLOP, there are really two answers to this question:

1) largest physically
2) largest in terms of cultivated land (land under vine)

Some very large quintas in the Douro are only relatively sparsely planted.

Are there any large quintas away from the rivers which might be sizeable if not very famous for bulk production of grapes? Something like Quinta de Ervamoira (although I appreciate that that is used for making quality wines).

Would the quinta size (estate and/or vine area) have been registered with the IVDP?

The individual plots are, along with their owners. But modern quintas are made up of plots that were purchased over time, and the IVDP (as far as I'm aware) doesn't keep track of that.

Then again, you can only call a DOC Douro wine "Quinta de XYZ" if all the grapes are from that quinta, so there might be a system in place to check that.

We visited and stayed at Quinta de Vent0zelo last March and irc they have circa 400 hectares but not sure how much of this is under vine.

Yes, Ventozelo is definitely a strong contender for biggest quinta (again, the modern Ventozelo is much larger than the original Ventozelo).

That was my thinking, especially since the original post made me wonder if it was an academic question, in which case contacting the IVDP for evidence might make sense.
