1880 Whitwhams Millennium
Whitwham’s Millennium 1880: bottled 2001. Much lighter in colour than the other Ports drunk this evening, still opaque in the centre but with a wide rim. Expressive on the gentle nose, soft golden syrup and candied cherries. A lovely and elegant palate of star anise and a touch of very ripe pineapple. A little pleasing bitterness on the late palate. The hint of bitterness follows onto the aftertaste, a good length finish of blonde coffee and orange. Lovely drinking, but far inferior to the other Ports being poured this evening. 94/100. Drunk 01-Jun-23. Decanted ½ hour.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

dark tawnyish color. Still very dark! Dark dried fruits, rasiny taste. Copy of Alex note of star anise and golden syrup. Compared to the other ports tasted that evening a bit flat. Still an excellent port but lacks a bit complexity and panache in the context.

This is really good port. Like a really really good 50 year old. But not quite in the same league as its competition tonight. I would have thought this had been quite substantially refreshed. 'Merely wonderful'.
