2017 Dow

Post by winesecretary »

Half bottle. Pop and decant and pour.

95% opaque red juice.

Splendid nose lifting straight from the cellar-cool glass. Star anise. Blackberry.

Cool mouthfeel then briefly blueberries before chocolate and then the blackcurrant. Then the blackberry and apple pie.

The tannins are so beautifully delineated. A little bit of dehydrated orange, late. Even later, meaty almost.

This is really very very good port indeed. Wait, or not, but there’s a treat in them there bottles (or in this case halves).

I tasted this just before bottling...and then proceeded to buy 6 of them. Have very high hopes for this one, it'll probably age beautifully.

2017 in general seems to be pretty amazing. Maybe not quite to the level of 2011, but even being able to make the comparison says something.

Thanks for the review. I'll be keeping my case of six bottles deep in cellar for a couple more decades I think/hope!

I own exactly no bottles of Dow 2017. Having read George's tasting note I slightly regret not having any for early drinking. Particularly in half bottle.

But I don't. I will have to drink my Churchill 2017 LBV instead. (A tasting note will be posted in due course.)

Or... you could drop by Hedonism and buy a stash of D2017 halves at £38/bt.

There are a bunch on sale on winebid at $30 a pop which seems very reasonable for our US friends

I really, really, really don’t need to be buying any more Port. Really not. Your suggestion is not helpful.

I'm with Mike here ... My wife never has enough shoes ... Thus it follows that more port is a very reasonable option and one that can be actioned ....
