1944 Kopke Colheita (bottled 1981)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled 1981. Copper-brown colour, 50% opaque. Slight hint of bottle stink on the nose, but distinctly a colheita in style. Iodine and Bovril show on the nose, smelling like a winter's day on Bournemouth beach. Sweet brown sugar on the entry but with gentle flavours of dates developing on the generous acidity. Some lovely fatness appears on the mid-palate, which is full of figs and sweet orange. Figs and apricots show on the aftertaste and the immense length of finish brings hints of grapefruit in the acidity. Served blind this was guessed to be Niepoort 1952 bottled in the 1970s. 89/100. Tasted 07-Oct-19. Decanted 3½ hours.

Tasted as part of a Bring a Bottle tasting at the Boot & Flogger.
