The Horizontal of 1970s, definite article, was held over two days and five flights, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October 2025, at the Boot & Flogger, as organised by Mike who was assisted by Julian.
1970 Martinez. Bottled by the Wine Society. Attractive bronze colour, 50% opaque. Slightly dirty nose, not showing very much. Nice flavours and structure on the palate, dried fruit with an impressive tannic core nearly fully integrated into the fruit. The dried fruit and orange citrus shines brightly on the aftertaste and finish. Lingering and lovely. 88/100. Double decanted 8 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
Tasted 13/10/25 from a sample kindly drawn on the night.
Bronze rim. Grubby nose without much fruit, assiduous swirling reveals some candied citrus fruit. Palate has some gentle red fruits with a hint of prune later. Long finish. Wine is completely resolved and needs no more time but good drinking now on this showing (although I suspect better a decade ago).
