Dating a bottle with no label
Dating a bottle with no label
Can anyone help provide a rough date for this bottle? The capsule is for Berry Bros & Co. The bottle seems hand-blown with a bumpy finish.
Thank you
Thank you

Hi Granmaa, I have seen other similar bottles from Berry Bros (note, before they became Berry Bros & Rudd, so pre-) with varying capsule colours in the same design as on your bottle, from the 1920s.

I would have guessed the bottle to be 1920s to 1940s.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026

Thank you, both. Will the year be on the cork? I plan to open it soon and will let you know.
Re: Dating a bottle with no label
i would push the cork in or use tongs. yes the shipper and date should be on the cork.

Yes, I would expect the year and shipper to be on the cork as Harry says, and Berry Bros might also be mentioned on there.
e.g. "Taylor, Vintage 1927, Bottled 1929" (each line separated by comma" or "Taylor, 1927, Berry Bros"

The bottle was a gift, and while I’d describe myself as more of an all-rounder than a regular port drinker, it certainly won’t be wasted on me.

That's a nice gift! Enjoy the bottle. I think we'll all be curious as to who the producer was and how the bottle held up after 99 years. 1927 was considered a legendary year for Port, so hopefully it represents well.
