Recorking old ports

Post by g-man »

Noticed the topic on spectator and thought it brought out an interesting point.

The first growths have an unofficial policy where for older bottles (20+ years) they would recork and top it off with their blessing..

Do the port houses do the same?

not going to say it has never ever happened...but as a general rule they don't do this. they may recork their own old in-house bottles that have never left their cellars, but they won't recork a bottle that you bring back to them.

its also my understanding that fewer and fewer First growth producers still do this and a majority have stopped.
