Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
Any of you NY port nuts want to adhoc a tasting?
Some of us were lucky to snag a few Fonseca 77s and I'd like to open one of my bottles to see how the rest of the case may be.
Place: whereever we gather
Time: anytime after 5:30pm
Wines: I don't know but there will be a Fonseca 77.

Would you be interested in combining this with the maturation tasting? I can just bring the 91 vargellas for the fun of it...
Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
possibly, if it doesn't turn out, I'll open it up to the dry reds crowd where we have port for dessert.SushiNorth wrote:Would you be interested in combining this with the maturation tasting? I can just bring the 91 vargellas for the fun of it...

There's no lock-in for jan 3...
Also, btw, I do happen to have an extra of Fonseca's SQVP from 05. Maybe we go with an emerging theme?

g-man, jdaw, are you in favor of merging the two tastings (this one and "maturation tasting")? I'm available either date, please let us know what you prefer.
Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
you do realize we would now have 8 bottles amongst 4 people.SushiNorth wrote:g-man, jdaw, are you in favor of merging the two tastings (this one and "maturation tasting")? I'm available either date, please let us know what you prefer.
While I can probably drink 2 bottles of port and still be some what coherent, it's probably not adviseable esp the day after christmas after coming off from work =)

ok, I guess we're drinking fine port two weekends in a row, one to end 08, the other to begin 09.
Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
What's the line up for this tasting again?
we have Fonseca 1977, Fonseca 1970
Tasters include:
Julian,
Josh,
Tbird,
Jeff,
mareff (possible)
we could bring in the Fonseca 97 (per Tbird), Fonseca 03 (per Josh)
I only have 1 bottle of the F91 that we could save for the maturation tasting or for drink now.

there is also an 2000 available, which got higher "professional" ratings. and it is a .375 if we seem to have too much wine on our hands..?? please advise, as i need to purchase tomorrow...

Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
I'd vote on the 97 if you could simply because the 00 would be very similar to the 03 (which is even better) . That and I've haven't tried the 97.TBird wrote:there is also an 2000 available, which got higher "professional" ratings. and it is a .375 if we seem to have too much wine on our hands..?? please advise, as i need to purchase tomorrow...

Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
Well, my share was "supposed" to be Taylor QdVargellas 91, Fonseca 03 ($80) to match Julian's Fonseca 70 ($a,lot).
I have Fonseca 05, tho, which I could bring instead of the TQdV91. They were priced the same ($47). Alternatively, perhaps someone wants to just work out a deal with Julian so we each are contributing about $50-70? Personally, I'm happier with equal or fewer bottles to # of people.

Okay, Let's do the Fonseca 03,
Mike, can you pick up the Fonseca 97? (Or actually the 2000 if it's the same price)
So our line up would be
Fonseca 1970, 1977, 1997 (or 2000), 2003

If the shampers tasting, ‟6:30 PM - 8:30 PM”, is to be a ‟break from port”. then we’d have to start the port at, say, 2:30pm. That works for me, but my understanding is that Josh is doing something intellectual in the afternoon i.e., isn’t with us.
Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
or perhaps we do a first tasting of the ports. Allow to open decant for another hour while doing some bubbly tasting.
and come back and retaste to see if air time has perhaps improved quality of tasted ports?

Yeah, based on the 5:30+ and the threat of food before hand, I was thinking this was an evening tasting. Was planning on wandering around NYC for a bit during the day, catching a bite, then heading over to our port venuejdaw1 wrote:If the shampers tasting, ‟6:30 PM - 8:30 PM”, is to be a ‟break from port”. then we’d have to start the port at, say, 2:30pm. half into a sealed, refrigerated bottle
half into a decanter for oxidation
Re: Adhoc Dec 26th stasting in NYC
Split decanting OK with me.
Also, what time should the ’70 be decanted?

as based on uncle tom's notes perhaps this would do well with the early open.
as with the 70s, it sounds like 4-5 hours might be a sweet spot

Btw, Julien, can we get to your place earlier?
I actualyl get out of work around 3:00-3:30 so i would be at your place by 4:00pm ...
Is that okay for everyone else?
Lineup is Fonseca 70, 77, 97, 03 ...
and a possible champagne break in between =)

The TPF Offline Guide wrote:Q: Given that decanting hours in advance is recommended for most VPs, how is that handled?
Decanting in advance is indeed important, and is discussed a little ahead of the event. Usual practice is to double-decant (that is, decant into a clean something, rinse original bottle thoroughly with water, rinse it once more with a small splash of the port that is then discarded, pour port back into original bottle). Usual time for decanting is the morning of the event, but as it can depend on the type and age of the port, it is usually worked out as part of the offline planning.

This tasting won’t run all night.
But immediately after this tasting finishes, at Tame O’Clock, there will be another tasting, with the theme of drinking the remnants from the first tasting. That second ‘Remnants Tasting’ may well run all night.
