Port for sale at auction
I'm creating a new thread for listing port for sale at auctions (online, catalog, or otherwise) that folks find interesting. I am not suggesting that we in any way collude on bidding, etc, but of course if two people converse quietly on splitting up a mixed case or the like, that's their business.
(I thought we had this thread, but couldn't find it in the past year's worth of posts)

Re: Port for sale at auction
Some 60's and 70's have been showing up on WineCommune. I forgot to keep an eye on them last time and a 1970 Warre slipped by at $62 (though I suspect their proxy bid was much higher, given that other bottles were going at 140-150). Right now it's 70 Warre and 70 Dow and they've piqued my interest.
Re: Port for sale at auction
I don't trust wine commune at all for these types of 1 bottle transactions.
Chances are, it's someone who found a deal some place, most likely not properly stored
and decided to pawn it off on wine commune.

Good idea to have such a thread a counterpart to Port for sale by retailer.

Ah, so here's the WineCommune trick -- I only buy them when JJBuckley is the seller. You know its coming from their store, and can simply get it at a discount with some shrewd bidding.g-man wrote:I don't trust wine commune at all for these types of 1 bottle transactions.

Re: Port for sale at auction
How would people feel about having UK and US threads seperately? Most of us are only looking for port in one location or the other!
I do like both threads though.

Would it make sense to place some low bids on Fonseca and Warre 1963? It would definitely make our offline complete.

Re: Port for sale at auction
I would not recommend bothering to bid until the weekend, and you will want to be online when the auction concludes as there is lots of 1$ upping at the last. If bidding actually showed your username in the bid history, it would be worth it simply so that we knew who was "in it," but bidders are anonymized.RonnieRoots wrote:Would it make sense to place some low bids on Fonseca and Warre 1963? What should be the maximum spent on the bottle, not including shipping? Consider what your alternative sources are for the bottles, and best-price-elsewhere. I'll bid up to that # (less the $3.50 service fee).jdaw1 wrote:Josh: please would you take charge of this. Bid something low but more than fire-sale at whatever time you deem best. Here's where they are at, now... This is unusually high, 6 days before the end of the auction, and there are a number of bigger names that I haven't seen bidding since last spring (the traditional port sell-off)
1963 Fonseca (fill into neck) $111
1963 Fonseca (fill base-neck, cracked capsule) $91
1963 Warre (fill into neck, sign of slight seepage) $72
1963 Warre (fill into neck, capsule is nicked and slightly corroded) $72
1963 Warre (fill midneck) $72
1963 Warre (fill into neck, capsule is slightly corroded) $22
1963 Warre (fill high neck) $28

The 63 Fonseca never goes below 150 (including tax/shipping) retail that I've seen in the states.SushiNorth wrote:

Oporto bottled W63 has a high incidence of leakers and/or poor levels - good fills are something of a rarity. UK bottlings are not often seen.

Re: Port for sale at auction
LOL! You have to bid up to your absolute maximum. It'll auto-bid in increments for you. If they bid $1 more, that was $1 more than you were willing to spend. Sucks, but cut the losses.DRT wrote:beware of lurkers here who may outbid you by $1![]()

I didn't let anything go until it was no longer economically logical; no-one got a great deal if i was bidding.

Re: Port for sale at auction
I was trying to caution against discussing maximum bids here as others will then know what you will bid as your max, and perhaps bid $1 more.

Re: Port for sale at auction
Brentwood Wine had a Niepoort 2000 up that started at $20. I put in an auto-bid up to $50, but 'burgundyman' out-bid me. So I drove him up to $70, which is essentially retail price for the bottle because there are various places on the web selling at or around that price.
I hope that isn't any of you guys!

Re: Port for sale at auction
JJ Buckley has an interesting bottle for auction at winecommune.com... it is a 1927 C Da Silva Fine Douro Port Five Crown Port. What makes it really interesting is that the auction has no reserve, and bidding currently sits at $12.
My reading of the label says this is just a basic ruby, and so therefore probably long past being drinkable. If that is the case, then $12 for what is simply an interesting bottle is probably about right (at least to me). But if this is actually a Vintage Port it might make a great bottle to have for the next Old & Odd.
What do you think? Drinkable or no?

Well it does say "Port of the 1927 Vintage" on the label, so it probably does contain 1927 grapes.
Now I'm second guessing... wouldn't a "Port of the 1927 Vintage" be a VP?

Re: Port for sale at auction
He's bid on lots of things I wouldn't touch, and often higher than I. However, given that he hasn't exclusively purchased from JJB and used to sell, I'm betting just another port nut. I sent him a note to seeg-man wrote:i think toberdick is the "house" buyer whenever something doens't hit reserves.

Re: Port for sale at auction
Morrell's has an auction coming up, for a no label, believed to be taylors 1924 ..
I've got a bid in, but was wondering is < 300$ worth a punt?
The fill is consistent with a 1924 bottle (or possibly poor storage of a much younger bottle)

Re: Port for sale at auction
Mid shoulder fill and signs of seepage...at that price an easy pass.
Re: Port for sale at auction
yea, but a perfect fill of this bottle will run in the 1000$ from the last christie's auction...Andy V wrote:Mid shoulder fill and signs of seepage...at that price an easy pass.
are you saying it's an easy pass because it won't be drinkable?

Re: Port for sale at auction
At that age and condition, it's a crap shoot. You've got a 50/50 chance that it is either good or bad. What worries me the most is the low fill level combined with signs of seepage. To me that's the death sentence for such an old bottle. If you're willing to take that risk, then go ahead. For me, I'd rather wait for another opportunity with a bottle in better condition and pay a little more. THere are lots of older bottles in great condition you can buy in the $300 range.

ah okay I see, doesn't signs of seepage mean that the fill level will go down anyway? =) ...Andy V wrote:At that age and condition, it's a crap shoot. Was hoping for better then 50/50 chance since if it is a 24, the year might be good enough to take a punt.
I've got a bid in at 240$... which with buyers would hit about 280$

think someone's been reading our notes.
10 pack of f 1970 - 1600$
and the croft went unreasonably at 340$ ~ 56$ / bottle
who are these people overpaying?
