Edit: What a joke. The "Best web price yesterday" is listed as $60. I am RIGHT NOW looking at someone else selling it for $33.
Edit: And... its gone. Was up for maybe 5 mins. Some people buy anything just because they like the idea of the event -- like the people who get too emotional and overbid at auctions.
I've been watching winestilsoldout.com all day and didn't even see this. I *have* seen a number of wines come and go within minutes, though, so it doesn't surprise me that the 2005 Vargellas would disappear quickly.

I wrote a little piece of software that monitors webpages, it's currently watching theirs for the word "port" to appear.

I buy basic drinking Pinot and CS at ≈$20 a bottle from WTSO. Generally good value I find.

Never bought port from them though.

I buy a lot of red wine from them, typically in the $12 to $20 range. On occasion I've gone as high as $45 - the 2006 Quinta do Crasto Old Vines Reserva, for example. I also find them to generally be a very good value, and I always check their price against wine-searcher.com before I order. Sometimes it looks like they're not the cheapest, but then when you factor in the free shipping they're easily the least expensive.

I've only purchased Port from them... twice, I think. Might have only been once. One was a 4-pack of 1999 Quinta de Roriz that arrived in excellent condition - probably the best condition of any bottles I've ever ordered over the internet. Off the top of my head I can't remember what the other one might have been, or even for sure whether or not there was another one.

I have a feeling we've discussed this before, though I can't find the thread. The words Port of the 1945 vintage seem to suggest that it's not a full Vintage, though I suppose it could quite easily be a Ruby or the equivalent of an LBV.

You stopped too soon!

"I received favorable information about it at Ask.com from someone who is knowledgeable about this particular 1945 vintage."

Ask.com... ROFLMAO.

We've discussed (briefly) a similar bottle before: here.

I was travelling through the Oxford area and found a chain of wine shops called S H Jones. They are lovely shops and I recommend that if you are in the area you pop in. They have a lovely port selection aswell as vintage champagne.

The ports I were interested in were:

Vesuvio 1994 - £64
Martinez 1994 - £36
Fonesca 1/2 1991 - £11

Any of these good prices? I can only find case prices on winesearcher.

the 91 guimarens is a fantastic price and well worth a case at that price.

In the states I paid 35 $ for hte full bottle 91 guimarens which would be £25 and I thought I had a great deal.

Their 97 was recently had for $16 in the US. I hesitate to think the 94 was that far exceptional to be worth 3-4x, but then again the pound is down. :)

With the change of continent I am unsubscribing from several US email notifications. Perhaps somebody remaining on the west of the Atlantic would like to subscribe and, when appropriate, post quotations in this thread. My desubscriptions include: WineAccess; Benchmark Wine; Wines Til Sold Out; Brentwood Wine.

I have found that which claims to be the best port shop in France, Lavina, at 3 Boulevard de la Madeleine (near Place d’Opera), 75001 Paris, +33 1 42 97 20 20. Graham 1970! Except that they want €288 a bottle. Likewise Taylor 1963 for a mere €503. Nacional 1970 costs €994,80; and Fonseca 2000 at €295 a magnum or €153,25 a bottle.

Also two bottles of use for tastings: Fojo 1998 at €60,80; and Fojo 1996 at €56.

The shop assistant was most interesting. As with other cavists, he insists that the French neither understand nor drink good port. Indeed, Lavinia used to have more, but they’re not buying any, are selling their stocks gradually, and seem to intend not to replace any.

He took my card, and promised to give my details to any portheads who happen to visit.

Wow, that's not far from where my wife and I stayed on our anniversary trip 2 years ago. Our apartment was on the corner of Rue Sainte-Anne and Rue des Petits Champs if I'm remembering it correctly. Nice area! Is your new abode nearby?

Nysa Vins & spiritueux on 94 rue Montorgueil had:
• Quinta de Santa Barbara, Special Reserve Tawny, at €17,50 a bottle;
• Porto Osmann 10Y, at €27,50.
The former is interesting: I thought that Santa Barbara is owned by the IVDP and used for experiments. Maybe I misremembered.

Next I must mention Nicolas Image. They are everywhere. In the UK they would be said to have a monopoly, but doubtless French libel lawyers would tell me that the term is ‟national champion” or some other guff. Apparently there are 250ish of them in Paris. I have photos of the dodgy-looking stuff they sell, but the data below also uses the website.
• Graham's Quinta Dos Malvedos 1998, €42.60;
• King's Port Blanc, €9;
• King's Port Red Crown 20Y, €33.10;
• King's Port Ruby Reserva Especial, €7.75;
• King's Port Tawny, €8.90;
• Lágrima Adriano Ramos-Pinto €14.75;
• Noval Fine Ruby, €10.55;
• Noval Fine White, €10.65;
• Noval Tawny 10Y, €23.20;
• Noval Tawny 20Y, €40;
• Quinta de Sao Pedro das Aguias Ruby, €10.65;
• Ramos Pinto 10Y Tawny, Quinta de Ervamoira, €25.75;
• Rozès Vintage 1997, €25.10 (website says LBV, but it is vintage);
• Sao Pedro das Aguias 10Y, €16.10;
• Taylor's LBV 2001, €20.75;
• Taylor 10Y, €28.10.

Le Repaire de Bacchus is a much smaller chain of shops. The one at 6 Rue Bayen, 75017 Paris, +33 1 47 66 76 75 was tended by a fine damsel vaguely interested in port, who now has my card. Meanwhile:
• Andresen 1991 colheita, €32.50;
• Andresen 1995 colheita, €25.90;
• Andresen 2003 vintage, €59;
• Andresen tawny, €13.75;
• Andresen white, €14.90;
• Ramos-Pinto 2003 LBV, €25;
• Halves of Smith Woodhouse 2000 vintage, €29.75.

I think, but am not absolutely sure, that it was in a previous visit to a branch of this chain that I saw the Noval 1968 colheita for €144.85.

Am I starting to detect that either you will be drinking more tawny / colheita than previously or else your (father's) storage problems will be solved?
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Google threw this up when searching for something else:

Wine Deal is offering Barão de Vilar 20 Year Old Tawny. Was £24.99; now £15.99 (inc. tax, delivery £7.99).

Has anyone tried this?

Some of those prices are really good. It's nice to see that Benchmark is finally recognizing that the market is in retreat and adjusting their prices, but they still appear to be behind the curve on the upper-end stuff. I can get 1985 Fonseca and Graham for about $10/bottle less than their offer, for example.

Wish I had storage space, though... I'd probably grab all of those $30 bottles if I did. :cry:

Those are 1/2 bottles of SWC85 at 34, but 64 for the full bottle is a pretty good deal. A better deal are some of those $30-50 wines from the 70's and 80's. Easy ready-to-drink, folks!

Really, anyone with a stable job, secure savings, and some spending cash should be taking advantage of 2009 to build their Port stash. We're not going to see a low-price glut like this for quite a while. Second houses are showing up with fabulous prices, and even some first-houses are showing up. Fonseca 85 is going cheap all over the place. When we've drunk all the F70 and F77, THE port will be F85.

That's a nice variety of 1985s, too... I may have to go ahead and order a smattering just to widen my mini-horizontal that I've been building. If I grab the ones from this that I don't already have I'll be able to do a 12-14 bottle horizontal all by myself, which would be pretty fun some day.

Those 1970 Real Companhia Velha are calling to me... $30 each is just crazy cheap.

Warning -- Hoopers63 (RCV) was almost undrinkable.

But yeah, i see those 85's and am MIGHTY tempted. but i have too much to drink, i'm going to try to let this one pass :)
Infantado85 and Noval85 didn't fare well in our tastings, but they're there, cheap. The Noval 1/2s would be a great "intimate night" wine, if it were tasty.

I bit. Picked up a bunch of the '85s and a handful of the '70 RCVs. Even if undrinkable I can use them for cooking!

My mini-horizontal of 1985s now stands at 16. :mrgreen:

Now that I've taken the time to enter all of the new purchases, CellarTracker informs me that I'm wrong. I have 17 different 1985s.

My desubscriptions now include: WineAccess; Benchmark Wine; Wines Til Sold Out; Brentwood Wine; Atlantic Wine Inc; Acker, Merrall & Condit.
And Vickers Liquors of Rhode Island, who once sold Ramos-Pinto 1985 at $25ish a bottle.

Vickers still has some cheap Ramos-pinto. Meanwhile, a store near me is having a sale:

http://www.suburbanwines.com/
(prices are per bottle)
COCKBURNS QUINTA DOS CANAIS 03 Q:1 Reg:$39.99, Sale:$29.99, case or more:$27.99
QUINTA DA NOVAL VINTAGE PORT 03 Q:1 Reg:$49.99, Sale:$37.49, case or more:$34.99
TAYLOR FLADGATE VARGELLAS 05 Q:3 Reg:$59.99, Sale:$44.99, case or more:$41.99
Q is quantity. a case can be mixed, and they've other stuff on sale. Personally, i think the quantities hardly make it worth it, but just in case...

update: QdN is gone.
