Does anyone have a good online source for buying this that they would be willing to share?

Always seems rather more expensive than I think it should be whenever i have picked it up in shops.

Go to any fabric store and $20.00 will get you a decade's worth.

In a kitchenware shop name forgotten on Shaftesbury Avenue I paid £50 for a 50-yard roll. But that was about a decade ago.

At the Grahams Lodge I witnessed the use of surgical gauze...we liberated some so will check the origin and post details later.

Incidentally, why do you need so much muslin? I thought the advantage of it over paper was that it could be constantly reused...

Reused...? That may be why i am finding decanting with muslin such an expensinve proposition!

How would you clean it - just a quick rinse/soak in soapless water?

But when the water dries it leaves a calcium deposit. Muslin should be washed in an old tawny port, and then allowed to air dry at about 30°C.

FYI, surgical gauze is typically bleached to sterilize it.

Thanks - watch if you do go for that 100yd roll though - according to the salesperson the stock they have is bleached.

Personally I have no idea whether that makes a noticeable difference or not, but would always tend to unbleached if i had the option.

I just did a quick search to show that cheesecloth is easy and cheap to find. I could search for unbleached as well.

One thing to be aware with muslin is it comes in different thread counts. I bought on that works well enough for dry wine, but port takes for ever for it get through and the muslin has to be totally soaked before it will work. Next time, I will look for something not as tight.

Here's where I usually buy mine. I go to the store, but I am sure online will work well enough too.
