1982 Churchill

Post by jdaw1 »

On Tuesday 8th November 2011, in The Steak Exchange EC2A 2EH, friends gathered to note the return to London of jdaw1, and the recent birth of his second daughter. The theme was ‟Port With Star Quality”, with appropriately themed placemats.

Ch82, from RAYC. Red, 60% opaque. To taste tannic young fruit, quite dry, with plums and prunes.

My first taste of Churchill’s first vintage.

90% opaque, showing as a modest red in the early stages fo maturity. Slightly corked on the nose, but still showing fruit under the TCA. Sweet entry, but with little fruit; the fruit is also restrained on the mid-palate. Very dry and powdery tannins. Dry aftertaste; chalky and dry finish of really good length. I wonder how much fruit the TCA has pulled out of this? 86/100.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
