Planning details split into new topic from discussion here
My availabilty of 77s, if we were to go down that theme, is as follows:
Fonseca
Taylor
Gould Campbell
Morgan
Niepoort
All are of course available, though i only have one bottle of each of Fonseca and Taylor so would be more than happy to share costs if someone with multiple bottles could provide!

Quarles Harris
Calem
Fonseca (from 4 Walls <=> excellent provenance)
SWC (only in Magnum if I recall correctly)
Dow
Gould Campell
Warre (in Magnum and normal bt if I recall correctly
)

Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
In London I have Sandeman 1977.
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
Q1. What is a suitable number of bottles per person?
Q2. If the answer to Q1. means we can't include all on the list, which bottles are the most favoured for inclusion?
I would suggest Dr Dirk's opinion should be given extra weight in this regard!

I have never drunk a Sandeman 1977...or a Calem 1977. If we decide to open up a Taylor and a Fonseca, it would also be a pity if we cannot muster up a Graham!jdaw1 wrote:In London I have Sandeman 1977.
I would suggest we stay away from opening magnums unless participation grows by quite some number.

First draft of the placemats.
- Has Dirk Bruns any extra initials?
- I thought about RAYC’s questions, and reached the obvious decision.

Good decision. But why 2 x QH?jdaw1 wrote:I thought about RAYC’s questions, and reached the obvious decision.

Maybe jdaw1 needs reminding that we will require at least 3 bottles of Dow 77!DRT wrote:Good decision. But why 2 x QH?jdaw1 wrote:I thought about RAYC’s questions, and reached the obvious decision.

Incompetence. Fixed. Leaving a space for something else!DRT wrote:But why 2 x QH?

This sounds really great
. Somebody is really thirsty.

Blue Stilton and Port - what else!
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
So that you can quantitatively test sensitivity to TCA by providing varying levels while keeping the Port-related variables as constant as possible? Excellent idea, I eagerly await the outcome of your testing.RAYC wrote:Maybe jdaw1 needs reminding that we will require at least 3 bottles of Dow 77!DRT wrote:Good decision. DB is saying, in very polite and delicate words translated directly from German, that we might not have enough bottles. We have a problem.DrDirk wrote:Somebody is really thirsty.
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
For 4 thirsty people, 6 bottles sounds right!
Looking at this list, my vote would be for the following:
Fonseca (WS1)
Warre (WS1)
Gould Campbell (WS1)
Taylor (RAYC)
Niepoort (RAYC)
Sandeman (jdaw1)
If we wanted to add a 7th bottle: Calem/Quarles Harris/Morgan
Wolfgang - i could supply the GC, but mine is a bit of a ropey looking bottle...

My preferences include Niepoort Cálem Morgan.

hmmm...let me see if i can find a guest.jdaw1 wrote:My preferences include Niepoort Cálem Morgan.
With 5 people, 8 bottles does not seem so OTT.

Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
Your list includes some ports that have become regulars at our tastings. If no guest, could we lose a regular rather than an obscure?
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
The only bottle from this list that i have drunk more than twice in 2011 is, i believe, the Taylor 77...jdaw1 wrote:Your list includes some ports that have become regulars at our tastings. If no guest, could we lose a regular rather than an obscure?
2x attendees at tastings i have attended include the Fonseca, Niepoort, Warre, Gould Campbell and Quarles Harris.
You are right though - Morgan and Calem have not had TPF outings for some time. Reading the reviews, i can sort of understand why!

So, does that mean Calem and Morgan are not regulars?RAYC wrote:The only bottle from this list that i have drunk more than twice in 2011 is, i believe, the Taylor 77...jdaw1 wrote:Your list includes some ports that have become regulars at our tastings. If the non-regulars are non-regular for a good reason, that softens my opinion.

Morgan '77 is OK. I quite enjoy it (therefore it must be light and evolved).
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I hereby appoint RAYC to be Supreme Dictator of the 3rd-Jan tasting of 1977s. I humbly beseech his Supreme Dictatorship, in the light of the preferences expressed, to decide in the interest of his people what is in and what is not.

The placemats will be finalised during the afternoon of Monday 2nd, and printed by me on the 3rd. Doubtless his Supreme Dictatorship will, before the late afternoon of Monday 2nd, give us guidance.
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
Subject to any late joiners, the line-up will be as follows:
Fonseca 1977 (WS1)
Gould Campbell 1977 (WS1)
Calem 1977 (WS1)
Taylor 1977 (RAYC)
Niepoort 1977 (RAYC)
Morgan 1977 (RAYC)
Sandeman 1977 (jdaw1)
I will also be bringing a guest, DAL, who is right-handed.
The booking has been changed to the board room due to the better light and the fact that DAL is 6ft 8inches tall. Please do let me know if you would like to revert to the tunnel instead.
Steaks have apparently been ordered.

When do people want the Sandeman 1977 decanted: 06:30 in the morning, or at about 17:30? (Previous TNs: not liked in NY; loved at Quinta do Porto; light in NY; thirsty Cookie; corked at the vertical.)
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
After some discussion with DrDirk I think it should be decanted ~ 17:30. However I would like to suggest to open the bt (just pull the cork) 3 hours ealier.

Can’t decant at work nowhere suitable to do it. (Well, the only place is dangerously near the legal-compliance woman who I have heard utter the phrase ‟birch switch”. That counts as ‟nowhere suitable to do it”.)
Re: 3 January 2012 - Dr Dirk in London - TCP
There is nothing useful that can be done anywhere near a legal-compliance woman, regardless of what she says in polite conversation. Having previously been married to one, I know this to be an indisputable fact.jdaw1 wrote:Can’t decant at work nowhere suitable to do it.
