Tapatalk 2 with TPF & iPhone
Can anyone advise whether they have got Tapatalk push notifications to work on an iPhone 4S? I installed this to obviate the need for email notifications, which are not the handiest way to manage new posts. However I receive no push notifications and the Tapatalk support is useless. Any clues..?

Re: Tapatalk 2 with TPF & iPhone
Tapatalk is... well, buggy, I think. I use a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which is an Android phone, so my results may differ from yours.
Push notifications for PMs work fine for me at both TPF and FTLOP. I don't use push notifications for any other purpose so cannot comment on further functionality.
However, the "Latest -> Unread" tab is inconsistent. It seems to work fine at FTLOP, but is rubbish at TPF. I often use Tapatalk to check TPF and am told by the "Latest -> Unread" tab that there are no new posts, yet when I check the "Forums" tab there are many new posts. Sometimes dozens.

I have installed the latest version of Tapatalk on this forum.
It seems to work fine on my iPhone5 but can others please test on other devices and report any errors/problems here?

I have unsubscribed from forums, cleared the cache, turned notifications off, logged out and quit everything and then done the reverse of all that. Let's see if the notifications work properly now.

Notifications must be specifically turned on in the android version of the app. Simply subscribing to threads, etc, is insufficient.djewesbury wrote:mmnnggnnmmnngg!DRT wrote:Are you breathing normally now?![]()

Also, push notifications via the app may (or may not) be immediate. I don't know how the iPhone handles such things, but for power management purposes it might only check apps every 30 minutes or something like that.

There are actually 3 separate places were one needs to check notification settings - in the app, in the general notifications preferences, and in the preferences within those for each app.Glenn E. wrote:Notifications must be specifically turned on in the android version of the app. Simply subscribing to threads, etc, is insufficient.djewesbury wrote:mmnnggnnmmnngg!DRT wrote:Are you breathing normally now?![]()

Re: Tapatalk 2 with TPF & iPhone
Here's something interesting. There seems to be no way in Tapatalk to delete PMs. This means that if, like me, you hoard all those old messages (saying things like "Don't say anything, I'm going to wind *name removed* up about that bottle of *vintage and shipper redacted*, this should be fun"), and eventually end up with a full inbox, at which point you can no longer receive new messages, you have to go to the full website to delete old messages and release new ones..

Allegedly, a packrat might be able to create multiple extra mailboxes within the PM system so that said packrat might be able to keep all messages ever sent or received.djewesbury wrote:hoard all those old messages (saying things like "Don't say anything, I'm going to wind *name removed* up about that bottle of *vintage and shipper redacted*, this should be fun"), and eventually end up with a full inbox
Doing so might render the message limit redundant, however, which is why this remains a rumor.

Re: Tapatalk 2 with TPF & iPhone
Tapatalk has been upgraded to version 4.0.0 on the server.
It appears to be working fine on my iPhone 5 and iPad but could those who use it please test and feedback here?
In the interest of transparency, the admins received an email this morning regarding the planned "Monetization" of Tapatalk which, according to the email is scheduled to take place around three months from now. From what I can determine Monetization involves earning money from links to websites that contain paid advertising. The plan seems to be that the owner of the forum containing the link earns a commission from the site it links to. Having discussed this briefly by email the admins are not minded to participate in such a scheme but we will monitor how it works during the three month test phase and then decide what to do, which will probably be to turn it off.
Could those who use Tapatalk please report any instance of seeing advertising when viewing
here so that we know what is happening from you end?
Interestingly, the Monetization dashboard of our account with Tapatalk says we are $0.12 in credit as a result of various links being used on this forum since May 2013.
We will keep you posted here things become clearer.

If possible, which it probably won’t be.DRT wrote:which will probably be to turn it off.
Riches! If we can’t turn off the advertising, I suggest that we use credit to offset hosting costs. If income exceeds hosting costs then â‘ I’ll be utterly amazed; and â‘¡ we’ll then decide what to do with excess money (e.g., subsidise a large tasting).DRT wrote:we are $0.12 in credit
E.g., let’s guestimate that Tapatalk takes in $10”° (per thousand impressions), and that we get 10% of this, and that one in ten threads has an advertisement. Using the first page of Organising Tastings, which goes back to January, that has 116496 views. So that would be about $12 for us. Double up for the rest of the site, add a bit to get to December, and that’s a wild guess of ≈ $30 to $50 per year. Riches!

This is their testing period. Wait and see. The app is now free; adverts are their only income. No adverts might mean no Tapatalk. (Also, I edited as you posted.)
Re: Tapatalk 2 with TPF & iPhone
Ooops: small error. What proportion of these views are Tapatalk rather than browser? Make that 30¢ to 50¢ per year.jdaw1 wrote:E.g., let’s guestimate that Tapatalk takes in $10”° (per thousand impressions), and that we get 10% of this, and that one in ten threads has an advertisement. Three users a day. Guess that each sees ten threads, so one ad impression. So 1000 impressions a year, so $10 to Tapatalk, of which they give us $1. Riches! Enough to buy, perhaps, ½cl of F70.
