My suspicion based on Phil's last clue is that there is a mathematical link between the name or names of the drinker(s) and the name of the Port. That is where my mathematical prowess ends. Best of luck trying to work it out whilst Daniel and I continue to guess randomly hoping to stumble across a valid combination.jdaw1 wrote:Sometimes a tough puzzle repays some effort. I don't disagree. I am just pointing out that it is perhaps patronising to suggest that everyone has the wherewithal to work out the answer to such well crafted puzzles through logic and prior knowledge. There are occasions when some mere mortals can only guess.jdaw1 wrote:Some puzzles took some effort and are well crafted.DRT wrote:My suspicion based on Phil's last clue is that there is a mathematical link between the name or names of the drinker(s) and the name of the Port. I fancy fiddling about with the dates houses were founded, leaving water as zero.
But actually I have no idea at all about this quiz. I like to have something to get hold of in a question and I just don't have anything.
And I would repeat my criticism of a previous clue giver that the bare minimum of a clue is that it gives some new information, not simply the vague referral to numbers, names and port, that I sort of knew already. Going on a bit now.

Re: One quiz at a time
I didn't keep my scribblings and can't be bothered doing it again but when I added up the value of the names drinking each wine those being drunk by two people were a higher number than the wine and the one that was the other way around.
I have no idea if that helps.

My ill-formed reasoning shot down in flames. But, assuming the question master understood my nudge-and-wink request for a clue, that is if numbers are being assigned to letters, A=0 rather than A=1.PhilW wrote:C. Re: One quiz at a time
Carefully, yes. Entirely correctly, nojdaw1 wrote:As yet, I understand nothing. But I do know that a riddle constructed by Phil will have been carefully constructed.PhilW wrote:Several member of TPF attend a port tasting with special rules on who may drink what. As a consequence of these rules:
DRT + AHB are allowed to drink the Croft together
DRT + JDAW are allowed to drink the Taylor together
PHILW is allowed to drink the Fonseca by himself
JDAW + AHB are allowed to drink the Warre together
Only one person at the tasting is allowed to drink water
By determining the rules of the tasting, propose another attendee and what he/she would be allowed to drink either on their own or together with others.

In fact JDAW+AHB would not be allowed to drink the Warre (that'll teach me to use a pencil and paper instead of writing C code!)
I should perhaps instead have noted that DRT + AHB + JDAW are allowed to drink the Martinez together.
Sadly PHILW will never get to drink the WARRE, either by himself or with others.
Obviously the above correction will now make the answers blindingly obvious and the riddle will be solved in a jiffy. If not, a more significant clue this evening (and yes I'm ignoring your last question JDAW, since the clue will be roughly an answer to that, but to allow reconsideration with my correction first).

Re: One quiz at a time
I have no nice tweed jacket which gets compliments wherever I go. It is assiduously ignored by those who should know better. So we can eliminate nice tweed jackets that get compliments from our enquiries, but not all tweed jackets. I shall do a venn diagram of the pleasingness of tweed jackets.djewesbury wrote:42 essays of variable merit, a biro (from the stationery cupboard; which is also stationary, thank goodness), a phone, a Wispa (disappearing), a desire to be elsewhere, perhaps in the Bung Hole about 28 hours from now, a tote bag containing a book about Adobe Dreamweaver, a very nice Magee tweed jacket which gets compliments wherever I go and which I complement with a contrasting pocket square.LGTrotter wrote:A front door, a piece of cheese, a corkscrew, some port, a key, a drawer full of things that don't really belong anywhere, a table, eyes, I could go on but you see what I mean.PhilW wrote:ok, a clue: you (almost certainly) all have an item in your position which provides the key to this puzzle.
