My suspicion based on Phil's last clue is that there is a mathematical link between the name or names of the drinker(s) and the name of the Port. That is where my mathematical prowess ends. Best of luck trying to work it out whilst Daniel and I continue to guess randomly hoping to stumble across a valid combination.

I don't disagree. I am just pointing out that it is perhaps patronising to suggest that everyone has the wherewithal to work out the answer to such well crafted puzzles through logic and prior knowledge. There are occasions when some mere mortals can only guess.

I fancy fiddling about with the dates houses were founded, leaving water as zero.

But actually I have no idea at all about this quiz. I like to have something to get hold of in a question and I just don't have anything.

And I would repeat my criticism of a previous clue giver that the bare minimum of a clue is that it gives some new information, not simply the vague referral to numbers, names and port, that I sort of knew already. Going on a bit now.

I didn't keep my scribblings and can't be bothered doing it again but when I added up the value of the names drinking each wine those being drunk by two people were a higher number than the wine and the one that was the other way around.

I have no idea if that helps.

Obviously the above correction will now make the answers blindingly obvious and the riddle will be solved in a jiffy. If not, a more significant clue this evening (and yes I'm ignoring your last question JDAW, since the clue will be roughly an answer to that, but to allow reconsideration with my correction first).

Which is it?

I have no nice tweed jacket which gets compliments wherever I go. It is assiduously ignored by those who should know better. So we can eliminate nice tweed jackets that get compliments from our enquiries, but not all tweed jackets. I shall do a venn diagram of the pleasingness of tweed jackets.
