Late substitution: the glass on the place for ‘G’ actually held Cockburn 1983.

• The vote was for the best ’83 of the night. AHB wanted to vote Vesuvio 2006. So we gave him a 4-3-2-1 vote, with the intention of ‘adjusting’ to zap the V06, and keep the same ordering with 3-2-1 scores. Somehow it didn’t quite work. (And I wasn’t the Returning Officer hurray!)
• There was also a vote for worst of the night, for which there were too many candidates that were strong candidates.

The 1983 vintage has fallen apart. Too many were undrinkable; the best were pleasant drinkable port of no great merit. How sad.

I have a different view of 1983 from JDAW, although we did have some unrepresentative bottles.

My general summary of the 1983 port vintage is that is produced some wines which are pleasant drinking today and will continue to be for another 10-20 years. It is a vintage in which the Symington wines performed better than most of the other big names, but there are also some very enjoyable less-often-seen names (Feuerheerd, for example). I believe this might last longer than the 1985s as there is more structure and less fat fruit, but given a choice today I would probably choose to drink 1985.

It was also a delight to drink only my second Cockburn 1983 that did not suffer from any TCA taint.

Thank you Daniel for organising the event.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I wasn't as unimpressed by the 83s on show as JDAW, preferring to sum them up as 'the good, the bad and the indifferent'. It certainly helped to give me pointers towards some lesser lights I might wish to purchase eg the GC, OBV and-as AHB has alluded to, the Feuerheerd. My inexperience of tasting the CK (this was the first) means that I have yet to taste one suffering from TCA taint and also now means that I will have to buy another four to see if the 80% stat (mentioned elsewhere) of TCA tainted CK stands up!

I should also say that it was another very enjoyable evening although next time, I will endaevour to bring the right Port in the correct bottle and not to confuse people further by initially mistakenly suggesting the substitute would be from a completely different year!

nearly the same result as at an 83 horizontal in september in Sao Joao de Pesqueira.

Wine of the night was Gould Campball, 2nd Niepoort and 3rd Taylor,

normally Dow, Warre, Graham and Ramos Pinto are also on par, but not outstanding. Cockburn is said to be very good, if you have a good bottle. but I never had one. :(
"An one litre bottle [of port] is the right size for two persons, if one person doesn´t drink." - Dirk Niepoort
