This is a perplexing and a possibly revelatory wine. I am of course tempted to make comparisons with Barolo and then with burgundy. And these comparisons are valid, the wine is both elegant and intense, I am very much reminded of a Langhe I had from the wine society. It has a great deal more about it than most Barolos I have tried and it has that sappy quality which makes me think burgundy.
But it has a character all of its own. And it is American. Ridge wines being a longstanding favourite of mine exemplify what I expect; big, robust stuff that weighs in at about 15%, this is 13.5%, hardly above most modern clarets. And it tastes so right. Was it worth the £24 I paid for it? Absolutely, for the revelation, but would I rush to buy another? I'm not so sure.
