A drink off the list at the Boot & Flogger, Dec 16

Post by djewesbury »

In a thread about testing the Boot & Flogger as a new venue for tastings, I wrote:December is unfortunately out altogether for the Boot & Flogger, so we are looking at January at the earliest. At this point I politely step aside and hand on the laurel crown to someone else, in the hope that I'm still able to make it on the date that is decided. Tom was very helpful and I think they'd like our business but he just didn't have a space in December.

On that note, does anyone want to share a bottle of Churchill 94 / Offley 70 on either of the dates mentioned (Monday 15 / Tuesday 16 Dec) ? If we can't have a room to ourselves we can at least meet for a civilised drink.
In attendance:
1. DJ
2. RAB
3. JDAW
4. DRT
5. CPR
6. MPM

Review thread

The ports:
Offley 1977 (B&F)
Noval 1966 (B&F)
Dow 1970 (DRT)
Churchill 1994 (B&F)
Warre 1970 (B&F)

Sadly not me. I'm in London overnight on the 17th and in Saffron Walden on the 18th so can't slide an extra night in the same week.

It's a deal.

A bottle of 1970 VP will attend this tasting. If I qualify for attendance I will drink it with you. If I don't, you will all drink it without me.

Derek: this is not the agreed punishment. It is an improvement on the agreed punishment, so I agree to it.

Tasting Master: is a brought bottle allowed in an “off the list” tasting?

Tasting Master: if a date has been decided, please amend thread title.

All: in his previous dieting effort, DRT failed one weigh-in. The punishment was set to be a good ≤1970 Port from his cellar, to be drunk by the team, but without Derek.

All: will placemats be needed?

All: currently we have no table and six people (DJ, MPM, CPR, JDAW, DRT, IDJ). Damn the torpedoes?

I don't know about this one. Tricky question. Please give me your opinions. I am in two minds, viz:
(1) I would like to drink it, but
(2) I don't think it makes a good impression on persons who may become our new hosts if we attempt to bring our own without a prior arrangement.

The B&F has the usual Davy's 1970s available of course. Might that be a compromise?
jdaw1 wrote:Tasting Master: if a date has been decided, please amend thread title.
Done.
jdaw1 wrote:All: will placemats be needed?
I think we shall have to manage without; or perhaps an A5?

7 actually - RAB will be joining us. I suggest we get there as early as we can and hog two tables.

Two tables that are already reserved? I asked because I feared the torpedoes.

By Davy's 1970s (pl.) I mean the 1970s that are on their fine wine list. Offley and Warre?

What are the tables in the public area like? Are we unlikely to be able to bag two if we're there early? Do you think the Christmas crowds will have everything booked?

I shared a lunchtime bottle of the W70, at the B&F, with a journalist from the FT. Lovely. (W70, rather than the male journo.)

∅ = Empty set.

If we were two or three, we might have squeezed in. But based on your report of your conversation with management, seven won’t work. If I have misunderstood your report of your conversation, say so.

I see. Then I suggest we just turn up in twos and threes and see what we can manage. At the very worst we can decamp to the George and drink beer.

Will glasses not be a problem for you? Or are you relying on B&F having a suffiency?

I am presuming that if we buy bottles from them they will agree to let us put the contents in glasses. Remember, we aren't bringing anything.

Why not ask if a table for 4 could be booked, which could serve as the bridgehead. If they are unable to manage that, then I suspect just turning up even in 2s will prove futile.

Good, but you’ll need to much better than that to be under 16st 5 lb.

Presumably now that we have a table booked, and can therefore have something to eat, adding a single bottle with corkage (if requested) can be negotiated on the night?

I haven't had a chance to ring back with order details (e.g. the O70 and Ch94) and I presumed that they wouldn't want to open and decant these on the basis of a booking from a customer they've never heard of before. I figured they'd need payment up front for the bottles. I thought that perhaps I might negotiate this in person nearer the time. And while doing that I could also raise the subject of the corkage for the D70.
