Portillez drinks Martino

Post by djewesbury »

Train-spotters who like loud Magee summer blazers (that's me) will be interested to watch Michael Portillo served a glass of Martinez 1953 in his programme on Great Continental Railway Journeys. The glass is served to him in the Factory House, which may be of more interest than Michael's customary face when served a local delicacy (which always seems to say, "how much of this do I have to drink before the cameraman cuts away?"). Michael went to Peterhouse and they don't have a very good cellar.

The episode is on BBC4 tomorrow (Monday 21st September 2015) and will be available on the iPlayer for around 30 days thereafter, before being endlessly repeated at late night on the same channel in the months and years to come.

I would have thought that a man who plies his trade in the world of film-based art would be in favour of this sort of programme being repeated often in order to broaden its reach to the masses. Your tone suggests otherwise. Never had you down as an elitist, until now.

I am in favour of programmes being left online indefinitely, not of them being used to pad out the schedules in the small hours. I am an elitist, but the right type.

Hmmm? I fail to see what difference it makes to you (or anyone else) at what time of day or night someone chooses to watch a repeat of a documentary.

All elitists believe that they are "the right type". A small Austrian once wrote a book about it.

Being a foreigner, I didn't know Michael Portillo. Thus I looked him up on Wikipedia. I think it's strange that a politician should turn into a successful TV presenter. I would have thought that people would be fed up with a politician once he's left the byzantine world of scheming and self-enrichment. But perhaps that's just my very low opinion of politicians in general.

Stranger things have happened, Andre. Who know, perhaps one day Daniel might even admit he is wrong about something?

Portillo is a rather odd example - I remember intensely disliking him as a politician but I have enjoyed many of the TV programmes he has presented/narrated since he retired from Westminster.

Hm, he's a (university) teacher. And teachers are always right. But I don't want to temper your hope. :)

Portillez drinks Martino

Post by djewesbury »

This thread moved quite quickly away from its port-based theme. I mentioned that Michael Portillo would be in the Factory House on TV, and that the BBC tend to repeat programmes fairly often. Derek then sought to make some sort of political point based on his love of repeats, because they somehow make the BBC more egalitarian and democratic. A spurious point if ever there was one. This is what always happens. You make a serious point and along comes Derek looking for a fight.

Anyway.

Michael Portillo is a slightly odd TV presenter and I think this is why the BBC love him: there's an element of gentle, un-self-conscious eccentricity about him, which they feed. "Oh no Michael, really, wear the pink one today, it really suits you."

I would like to watch it, but the iPlayer is only working when you're in the UK (something to do with IP-range).

Yes - you need to use a proxy server that tells the BBC website that you're in the UK. It's worth it. A bit of Paul Symington, the Douro, Vesuvio, the Cockburn Lodge and the interior of the Factory House.

Using a proxy server? Oh dear, I guess I'm not foxy enough for proxy. (Sorry, I'm in my pun mood today).

Could anybody hear clearly who was Michael Portillo’s host at the Factory House? The name is given at the video time of 06:46.

Or is it more like 'Zhoolian'? I ask because of your Southern European feminisation of my name. I think it adds to the romance if he has a Mediterranean flavour too.
