1970 Martinez

Polished redwood in colour, glowing in appearance; 40% opaque. Lovely nose of spices and cinnamon over the top of sweet, candied cherries. Balanced entry but this port gets into its stride in the complex midpalate that brings together the sweet=, candied cherry with nutmeg and ginger. The tannins are all but gone, melded into the flavours of the sweet fruit but there is sufficient acidity to keep the balance. The aftertaste is dominated by the candied cherries but with a delicious floral finish at the end - if you can be patient enough to reach the end of the finish! Delicious, mature port made in a balanced and elegant style. 91/100. Drunk 28-Mar-16.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
