Moving on to assembling the cast.
Tier 1 should be easy...
From Tier 2 I have:
- Burmester (Library release)
- BBR Own Selection (same case 2 bottles)
- Delaforce (same case 2 bottles)
- Roeda (Magnum)
- Gonzalez Byas (same case)
- Messias Cachao (same case) - I am pretty sure Messias only produced a Cachao
- Krohn (same case) .
Possibly I can get the other sogevinous wines Calem / Kopke / St Luiz /Barros?

Have the following (all bottles) that probably meet requirements for the tasting(s):
Tier 1 & 2
2+ Dow (from the same case as the bottle tasted on 9 Jan)
2+ Morgan (from the Christie's clear-out sale)
2+ Cockburn (2016 release, direct from C&B)
2+ Warre Private Cellar (2016 release, direct from C&B)
2+ Noval (Churton's bottling - all purchased together & look identical, but can't absolutely confirm they came from the same case)
2 Rebello Valente (same auction lot and look identical, but...)
2+ Croft (from a previously unopened OWC - quality can be corroborated by PhilW)
Tier 3
1 Royal Oporto (final bottle from an OWC purchased at Christie's many years ago).

For those who attended the
1970 horizontal in 2009, can you recall if the
Messias was not actually Messias Cachão?
This post seems to confirm that there was no 1970 Messias.

I have a note from a tasting in 2011 that there is a Messias 1970. Most of the grapes for this wine came from Quinta do Cachão but the blend also included some old vine lotes which had been bought in from farmers who were long-standing suppliers of grapes and wine to Messias but with land outside Cachão and therefore the wine could not strictly be called Quinta do Cachão. My notes also suggest that only 500 cases (of 12 bottles) of the Messias blend were made that vintage - and my notes were based on a conversation with someone who I am entirely confident who knew what they were talking about in substantial detail.

Thanks you for this wonderful insight Alex. I think this means we will continue the hunt for a 1970 Messias, while the TN for the mentioned above still needs amendment.

@JDAW, I'm now a bit confused.
Above, you say that the bottle at the 30 Jan 2009 tasting was actually Cachão, linking to a picture of a Cachão bottle. But that picture comes from a separate bottle tasted in April 2009, where the
tasting note laments that Cachão was missing from the 30 Jan 2009 tasting. Could you recheck?

The 1970 vintage is 50 years old this year. Birthday celebrations are required.
What: Tier 1 & 2 ports from 1970
When: Friday 9 October 2020
Where: The Ovens,
The Boot & Flogger (
Google maps).
Oh dear. And do you know who else's birthday it is on the 9th October? Yup. Yours truly. (I will be 21.)
Julian hasn't planned anything for me, so The Port Forum clan has beat him to it. Julian will be gracing you with his attendance to this one. And he will also be making it up to me bigtime.
You gentlemen better make a toast to me in addition to toasting the 1970 vintage.

The SQL script that creates the index only reads the title of the first post in each thread so that needs to be in the correct format.

In addition, I have some brands with one bottle only, and some tire 3 bottles as stated in a separate thread. Sten and Stefan have additional bottles.

I've now mostly finalised who should bring what to the tasting,
indicated after the names in the top post.
I've tried to contact most people in advance about their contribution -
if you are surprised/confused/have a query, drop me an email/PM.
A few points to note about logistics for the tasting:
- I am assuming everyone is having both lunch and dinner,
please advise if you don't want lunch or dinner or both
- I will operate a money clearing system for the whole tasting, which means that I will work out the cost for each person for the port, lunch, dinner and tips, and will ask for payment up front. Some people are very generously contributing a hefty number of bottles and will be receiving cash rather than paying it!
- the bottles will be costed at £90 per bottle, with the exception of £120 per bottle for T, F, D, G, Ni, which are typically more expensive
- I will slightly overestimate the costs in case one or two folks need to drop out, and consequently I expect that there might be a small repayment of up to £30 per person once all of the actual costs are known and taken care of

Became aware of this last year, as occasionally appears at auction. Tony has tried it / possibly has some and apparently it's not very good.
Unless it's going for not very much at all probably worth avoiding.

More interesting though is the Cabral Serafim 1871 which some of us have / have tried. Had a bottle about a year ago and it was very good and showed well in some fairly exalted company. A later below low-shoulder bottle was also very drinkable.

As well as bottling for others, Dolamore have a few own-brand vintages of VP; I'm aware of '63, '66, '70, '75 (QH) and '77 (SW) but as you can see I don't know what was used for their '70, so would be interested to hear what the cork shows if/when you open that bottle.
