Sounds like we were in the same neighborhood today. Wish I'd known, i had a bottle of cheap QH 2000 LBV in my backpack and was searching for a place (and people) to drink it with. Wound up opening the Vino Verde at Kasumi Den (i am testing new places for the sake tasting hehe)

If the LBV says nothing, then it is filtered. Traditional / unfiltered LBVs note this fact on their label somewhere.

I know nothing about the Rainha Santa but am interested to learn more.

Barros LBVs are filtered (and not to write home about). All I know of Rainha Santa is that it's a common brand in Portugal, mainly for cheap rubies and tawnies. It is a producer that is hanging around in the lower tiers. That said: I never tasted anything from them, so would be most interested in seeing a TN.

jdaw1 and I stopped by Warehouse Wine & Spirits today, its in NYC on Broadway, on the corner of Waverly (/Astor). They had some low prices on smaller houses and SQVPs. There is no case discount on port.

1997 Martinez $16**
1994 Offley $50
1995 Offley $26
1994 Rozes $40
1994 Calem $30
1996 Calem $30
2000 Calem $40
2000 Ferreira $30
2000 Rocha $49
1997 Qd Eira Veha $26*
1995 Qd Noval - Silval $26

* - we cleaned them out of EV, but they have more in the warehouse so call first. WS rated it 87.
** - The Martinez is discounted as they are trying to dump it quick (they wanted more EV, but got shipped the wrong thing). We don't know if its any good, but it's cheap and WS rated it 87.

We left y'all some bottles (except EV), but don't wait around on the Martinez.

  • $200 Warre 1968 Reserve Tawny, “aged 30 years in oak casks†. Presumably a colheita.
  • $300 Niepoort 1934 colheita.
  • $400 Niepoort 1938, “decanted in 1977†. Presumably a garrafeira. IVDP label AP 170770.
Comment welcomed.

The 1968 Warre will be a colheita. Warre don't make much colheita style port, but I currently enjoy the occasional glass of 1988 which seems to be the most frequently encountered Warre colheita in London at the moment. However, the price of the 1968 is clearly pitched at the"affluent 40 year old birthday" market. Don't touch it at this price, would be my advice.

Niepoort 1934 colheita - not sure. Niepoort have a good reputation for their colheitas, 1934 was a good year for the grapes, the 1931 colheita was great last summer and the 1934 colheita has a very strong reputation - but it looks expensive to me...

Niepoort 1948 is certainly a Garrafeira style port. I've not tried it but would assume that it came with all the same style and reputation as their other Garrafeiras. Just a shame that it came from a vintage 70 years ago and is so expensive.

Personally, I would probably pass on (1) and (3) for the moment and be tempted to go back into the shop next year to make an offer if these bottles remain unsold. (2) would tempt me given the reputation this port has, but then I'd think of the vintage port I could buy with $300 instead and pass on this, as well.

Alex

Thank you. Solid advice. I’ll pass.

Yes, we have already secured the 1935 from this source :D

For anyone after a cheaper option, Tesco have some of their port on sale until 15th June. This includes:

1994 Tesco VP (Symington) at GBP12.79 (down from GBP15.99)
Tesco Finest 10 year old Tawny (Symington) at GBP8.79 down from GBP10.99.

Both have served me well when in need of a cheap quaffing port!

I've just had an excited phone call from my better half. She's in Makro at the moment and wants to know how many bottles of Graham's '83 I want her to buy at £35 per bottle.

They also have Fonseca Guimaraens 1988, Qd Cavadinha 1995 and Qd Bomfim 1996 @ £17 per bottle.

So the question is, would you prefer one bottle of Graham's 1983 or two bottles of Cavadinha 1995...

$70/bottle of an 83 isn't a fabulous deal, but it's probably a better wine for short-term drinking. The 95 is likely a better bet if you're willing to put it away for a while (i'd buy 4 of 95 and 2 of the grahams, if it was me, and maybe 2 of that mediocre 88 as its cheap and ready)

If that's inclusive of vat, i'd say that's a good price, I'd doubt you could find it in the uk retail for less then that. Can't keep thinking about the piss poor dollar conversion Sushi when these guys all get paid in pounds =)

Wine Searcher has £35 (inclusive of VAT) as pretty much on par with the lowest price available in the UK. It should be less at auction, but auction prices have been a but unpredictable recently.

And the Graham '83 is a wine I particularly enjoy after a good, long decant - probably the best '83 I've drunk.

(And I agree that the Makro website is rubbish.)

Interestingly, these appear to be an ex-cellars release, presumably to coincide with their 25th anniversary.

How do I know that they are ex-cellars? Because their very clean, new looking labels have printed in tiny letters at the bottom "Bottled by Symington Family Estates, Vinhos Lda". If I recall correctly, this company only came into existence around 3-5 years ago.

That's a good price on the Graham's. I just bought 3 or 4 from Seckford for £29, but including shipping to the Netherlands they were about the same. (Sorry jdaw, shipment is already made).

The Cavadinha is also well worth buying. I've enjoyed it a couple of times, since it is widely available at ┚¬25 here (Albert Heijn XL), and if you are willing to throw some airmiles in, it will only cost you ┚¬10.

Going rate at auction for a case of G83 is about £300 + BP, so a retail price of £35/bottle is quite keen.

I'm not greatly wowed by the idea that a bottle of port is 'ex cellars'.

The average temperature in Oporto is just over 14C, whereas deep cellars in England range from 9 - 12C. Temperature controlled cellars are usually maintained at 11 - 12C.

Some of the bottle stores in VNG are barely underground, leaving them vulnerable to seasonal variations, and I have never seen any evidence of temperature control.

While an ex cellars bottle has better provenance, it is not necessarily a better bottle than one bought at auction.

New Hart Davis Auction coming up on June 28th,

bit weak on ports tho

Grahams 94 lot 955
9 bottles in the lot estimate 450-650

Grahams 66 lot 539
12 bottles in the lot est 1200-1800

Fonseca 1980 lot 540
12 bottles est 450-650

The Fonseca is the only one I'm going to try and take down.

Compared to the 85 Graham, the 83 is a little lackluster. I wouldn't pay over $70 for the '83, but would pay $150 for a magnum.

Fonseca 83 is probably the best 83 I can think of off hand...

I contacted Patrick Wilkinson earlier this week and secured 2 cases of Martinez 85 that are now winging their way to my off-site storage.

There are 2 cases left if anyone else is interested. Patrick has agreed to waive his £500 minimum order limit for :tpf: members but has said that he cannot split cases.
