12 x Warre 1977 'from the cellars of an Oxford College' at the Bonhams auction today. £40 a bottle so not to bad for something to drink over the next few years. Of note from the auction was that most lots went for far over their estimate.

Didn't get a thing at Bonhams, but scored some cheap T85 at Christies..

Away from London I went scuttling up to the midlands last night for an evening sale of what was mostly vinous crap (and an auctioneer who was knocking down lots at 200/hr!) and scored two little gems - an unknown '17 and a G27 - both very nice bottles with levels in neck.

I've been trying to land a decent G27 ( - or three..) for eight years now, and have only clocked two others along the way, neither pristine.

- What's the betting six more come to auction before the year's out?

I feel a little crestfallen when I read about Uncle Tom at last getting the '27 Graham he was looking for. However my purchase of a case of '94 Graham on BBX is probably just as exhilarating to me. I do like buying port that needs keeping, it gives me a sense of hope.

That pesky BBX is a bit on a hair trigger though, all rather too easy.

3x 1991 Gould Campbell
1x 2003 Niepoort LBV
4 x 2004 Niepoort LBV

Mixed lot at auction. Average price p/bottle 21 euro (incl. buyers premium). Good price on the VP, reasonable price on the LBV's I think (for Dutch normal prices that is).
:D

Also received my first case (6) of 2011 VP, my Kopke has arrived Now comes the hard part, leaving it at peace for the coming 15-20 years before trying the first bottle

28 x Croft Purple Reserve (4 for trial then 2 cases)
31 x Dow Trademark (I went for 48 but they could only find 31!)
12 x Graham's 10 year old tawny
12 x Gaia LBV
12 x 3 year old tawny
1 x Taylor's 10 year old tawny
1 x Fonseca Guimaraens 95
1 x Krohn 20 year old tawny

Putting this away I uncovered 24 x D92 I picked up from Seckfords last summer and had forgotten.

This ought to last me until Christmas ;-)

The purple reserve is on offer at the moment. First bottle was uninspiring but I persevered. Second bottle was sufficiently better that I picked up 2 further cases. The Krohn is sublime.

Only had it once but loved it. Bought from Berrys, I noticed that stocks were getting low and there seemed to be less around at other merchants as well. I only hope that all these ex-cellars stock are as good as the ones shipped originally.

Did you buy it knowing that it was one of the 10th anniversary chestnut cabinets? I forget how many of the cabinets were made, but they are pretty rare these days and to find one with the original bottles is a good find. Nicely done.

i didn't even know about these cabinets at all

I personally was shocked when the wine merchant charged me 80$ to ship an OWC.

They simply said it was heavy, only when it arrived, was I appeased.

Having only tasted a couple so far - am thinking about getting some Vesuvio. I have the 1994s, which might be ready in my lifetime - just, but would be interested in everyone's opinion regarding which of the other vintages they rate most highly - as well as how they compare to the 1994.

This thread might be useful to you.

I have attended two complete Vesuvio verticals, one at the quinta in 2006 and the one linked to above in 2010. My memory of both events is that, 1989 and 1990 aside, the consistency in the quality of Vesuvio VPs is fantastic. Those first two vintages are quite different beasts due to the fact they were stored in the Douro for a period of time an have a Douro bake character. That doesn't make them bad, just different to the later vintages. Whilst I can recall tasting a small number of duff bottles of Vesuvio I can't think of a duff vintage. Fill your boots

i've got 6x of most vintages minus the 89 and 90

i've enjoyed drinking the 95s as they hit the US auction blocks around 30$. I recall the 97s drinking well too but i'd pick up the 95s over
