Aww, if it wasn't so sad, it'd be really funny.

Ex cellars:

12 x 1998 Warre's Cavadinha
10 x 2003 Warre's unfiltered LBV
2 x Graham's Crusted 2003
(They're cheaper at the source than here on the German market)
------
From a merchant here in Germany:

6 x 2004 Noval unfiltered LBV

All to start or complement a "wine ladder" (a term I learned here on TPF)

Well, three came up at auction. But one wasn't all that great of condition. So I bid on the others and won. You'll hate me for this part as even by UK standard it's cheap for this old VP. I paid about $1700 for the pair (which includes buyers premium and tax)

You didn't miss it. It was cancelled because there were not enough participants.

Not enough participants?? How could this be? Was this a worldofport event?

Re: Latest buy

by AW77
Yes, it was a World of Port event. Why? Garrafeira is quite expensive, but there are fewer declarations than with "normal" VPs. So the price of the Garrafeira tasting was that of a big tasting, but the line-up only consisted of less than a dozen bottles. So people were somehow put off by this I think.

Yes, I tasted this Crusted at the Essencia this year. I will order 12 bottles more from my local supermarket.
By the way: The retail price here is 19,99 Euro, which is just 3 Euro more than the 09 LBV.
As I still have 6 bottles of the 2007 Niepoort Crusted there is really no need to drink the one from 2011. :)

If we start our Mosel tour from Cologne, you could stock up here (if they still have the Crusted on the shelf by then). Or I could buy some bottles now and give them to you in August.
By the way: I could get the sixth bottle yesterday (there were bottles on the shelf once again).

Half a dozen Warre LBV from Waitrose with the 25% off. And a couple of the 2011 BOB, just to try and a half dozen H&H 15yo Verdelho. Not that the last one counts on this thread.

I note with some relief that I haven't been listing a fraction of the stuff I've bought lately. If I did I think I would start receiving PMs asking me if I'm OK.
Case of F70 and some random 85s.

Well. I was in Porto. A gentleman mentioned that he'd bought a case recently, and that there was one other. I had some cash and thought, hmm. So I contacted Corney's who said it had been bottled by them and been with them since release and that the levels were good. So, I said, does that mean you'll let me buy it? And they checked into it and said yes. And I did. And in September I'm going to tootle across to Ayr and pick it up.

Just looked it up, not glowing but warm words. From a magnum that looks right you have once again secured pole position to give the last word on this wine.

Oh you know, a couple of Dow, a couple of Warre. No Graham. These were the makeweights that I didn't really want, but which would be economical to have collected if I won the lot that I didn't at Brightwells. I got the makeweights. Such is life.

6 botts of QdN 1997. Bought DP and inc. VAT from an established London merchant who appears to have got the price wrong (i'm not usually in the market for these). Bottles look pristine so unless they are ex-Kurniawan stock or similar, then i might just have scored a bit of a bargain.

Whilst rather pleased with the find, i am also slightly embarrassed about my own greed, thus prompting the question: what obligations, moral, legal or otherwise, does a buyer have to (i) inform the seller of a potential pricing error and (ii) refrain from "hitting the offer" so to speak?

Example: an airline misprices business flights to NYC at £40 when they should have been £4000. Past cases of this have, i think, ended up in court (or other relevant body), and in some cases ruled in favour of the airline on the basis that the quoted price was so far from realistic that any potential buyer ought to have realized there was an issue/error.

In my view, wine buying is not completely analogous to the airline example as wine can be negatively affected by storage conditions, provenance etc. which in turn affects the price as well. Whilst i carried out some due diligence (getting a picture of the bottles), i can never obtain "perfect information" about the bottles. This should in turn allow for a greater bid/ask spread and thus strengthening the buyer's argument, both morally an legally.

I would be interested in hearing your views on this (other than: "bring the bottles to TBH and we'll help alleviate your guilt").

Moderators, feel free to move to a new thread if you feel that my post hijacks the current thread.

Unless others disagree I think this is best left below the radar by remaining here

Congratulations. Morality in the wine trade would make an interesting study. I'm not sure the researchers would find much evidence of it.
