Software that makes placemats
Re: Software that makes placemats
I’m making placemats for somebody whose first language is Portuguese. There are, scattered thoughout the default settings of the placemats, words and phrases in English. Please could somebody fluent in Portuguese translate for me? The words and phrases needing translating, next to the PlacematParameter holding them are at github.com/jdaw1/placemat/blob/main/Documentation/translations.md. Please?!
Perhaps post here, or in a new GitHub issue.
Thank you.

Re: Software that makes placemats
I'll start working through these as I have a few moments. Others can contribute as well!
Wine Of The Night?
Vinho da Noite
What is it?
O que é?
Times (i.e., time at which wine decanted)
literal: vezes
hours of the day in Portuguese are usually plural, though so...
hour: hora becomes horas and is used like this: "o vinho foi decantado às doze horas" meaning the wine was decanted at 12 hours (i.e. 12 o'clock)
Eye
literal: olhar
appearance: aparência
Nose
literal: nariz
smell/odor: cheiro (noun) or cheira verb
Mouth
literal: boca
taste: gosto
Score
literal: partitura which I do not recognize
grade: nota

Re: Software that makes placemats
I was having a debate with Julian about these. My feeling was that you wouldn't translate directly but would instead go:
o aspeto
o cheiro
o sabor
What would you expect to see if you were looking at wine reviews in a copy of, say, Revista dos Vinhos?
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026

Re: Software that makes placemats
In wine terms we use "nariz" and "boca" (nose and mouth) in Portuguese all the time. "Nariz fresco" = fresh nose. Quite common.Alex Bridgeman wrote: ↑14:42 Tue 09 Sep 2025I was having a debate with Julian about these. My feeling was that you wouldn't translate directly but would instead go:

I debated between gosto and sabor. Essentially, taste vs flavor. I think either works.Alex Bridgeman wrote: ↑14:42 Tue 09 Sep 2025I was having a debate with Julian about these. My feeling was that you wouldn't translate directly but would instead go:

I also went back and forth between pontuação and nota for score, but since Miguel says the former then that's the correct answer. In my head they're slightly different but equivalent... basically something like "points" vs "grade".
For Decant Time, I think the software is looking for a hora da decantação rather than duração da decantação. I.e. "what time was it decanted" and not "how long has it been in the decanter."

Honestly I'd be comfortable with either, depending on what actually goes into it. If it's a numerical score I think pontuação would be better; if it's more of a qualitative, ordinal, or a different type of score (like letters A through F, things like that), then maybe "nota" would be more appropriate.
Re: decanting time, yes, I hesitated because I was unsure of what it actually meant. If it's "time of the day the wine was put into the decanter", then "Hora da decantação" should be fine; otherwise, "Duração da decantação" would be the correct choice for "amount of time in the decanter".

Re: Software that makes placemats
I have to say that this placemat software and the Placemat Wizard are great. It took me a little bit to figure out how to manipulate the data and change fonts, backgrounds, order of the glasses etc., but if you spend enough time reading Julian's notes and going through the code you can create your own. Great stuff, Julian and Mike! And thank you both. Below (if I can attach it correctly, lol) is a sample of a placemat I created for our next local tasting.

Re: Software that makes placemats
Thank you for allowing a critique of this design.
This is a Ferreira vertical (to which, regrettably, I had not been invited). So all the Ports are Ferreira. What differs is the vintage. So the thing about each that should be said most clearly, the thing that should be shouted rather than whispered, is the vintage. Thus:
/Titles [ (60) (63) (70) (77) (80) (83) (85) (87) (91) (94) (95) (??) ] def
The “Ferreira” could be present as a much smaller Overtitle. This would also remove the redundancy between “Fr” and “Ferreira”, and would somewhat de-clutter.
Separately, in the Titles I am not fond of oblique nor italic. But YMMV.
Examples, made from 2026 to 2007, most but not all of which I like, within which images link to PDF:

Re: Software that makes placemats
Thank you for your comments, Julian. You make some fair points and I agree the placemats are a little cluttered (and somewhat redundant), but I was going for pizzazz my first time out. I also wanted to test things out seeing as I've never played with code before. I think going forward my placemats will probably be less busy and I'll certainly keep your points in mind. Less can be more sometimes; and, it's a hell of a lot easier to adjust the code with less changes.
One thing I did find was that I had a heck of a time getting a lot of the fonts that Windows 10 claims to support, but apparently doesn't. I'll keep playing with them going forward to see what else works.
You're more than welcome to jet over to NJ for the tasting on the 19th if your calendar is open that day.

Hey Julian:
It is an open invite---until we get to 12. As of now we are a couple short---come on over. Would LOVE to have you!
A few of us are going on a Port Shopping Spree in Newark as well earlier in the day.

Thank you, but I’m not coming to the USA any time soon. If otherwise, I’ll ping people.
Please, photograph Port shelves and post in the Port for sale by retailer thread.
