Am I right in thinking that Tredwell doesn't put much on the ball? Heaven forbid we get another ten years of Ashley Giles stylie 'the one that goes straight on'.

Listening to TMS, I have spotted another element of Aussie strategy. Murder the opposition anthem! What on earth did that woman just sing? Sounded very little like the anthem as I know it!

Prediction time:

How many runs will England have when they are bowled out on day 2?

Yes. He irritates me so deeply and he has been so awful for such a long time that I could almost cry that he did so well this summer. You could throw a cucumber sandwich in any county dressing room and hit three batsmen with as much talent as Bell and they wouldn't be as useless as him in a crisis.

Why does he annoy me so much?

Cor blimey. Strong words. I think he has a great deal of very natural talent. I think he is sometimes prone to strange decisions but I also think he keeps his head for the most part. I could kill myself quite happily whenever I hear him being interviewed but then again that's not what he's there for.

That last question was of course rhetorical.

He annoys me so much because he reminds me of all the dim witted soldiering on which this land is prone to. No matter that he only ever scored a run after Cook, Trott, Pietersen et al had put on 30,000 without loss. Forget that most of his big scores are on matches against poor sides or when the outcome of the match has been settled. Let's plough on with a man who has all the presence at the crease of Charlie Chaplin. Because he did well one summer.

And yes, to listen to him being interviewed with his sporting cliches coming so thick and fast that he scarcely has time to say aught about what is actually happening in the game is a special kind of torture. For me.

But like Jimmy he will retire a much lauded veteran, become a pundit and end his days on the MCC committee. Whereas he should be pelted to death with unwashed cricket equipment of the intimate kind.

And I'm not sure I have forty years of life left to get over it.

I also did a double take but I do not expect Brad to get a ton. The other end will go down before that. Let's say he can harvest strike for a while before Lyon is skittled leaving us a lead of around 70.

Can England then bat all the rest of the day? If we can, we have the potential to win the match.

Probably depends on whether or not Johnson is still on fire. He took three wickets for four runs at the start of last night's session. If he keeps that up it will be difficult for England to last all day. But this does look like England's best position yet.

Good point, but shouldn't the top/middle order batsmen be the ones who put on the runs whilst the tail hold on for as long as they can?
