Berry's Jan sale list has just gone in the bin - the case prices look reasonable until you realise they're cases of 6..!

Q de la Rosa finest reserve - half bottles £63/12 = £5.25ea.

- although this is the king of Reserves, unfiltered and with driven corks, it is still a reserve, so way over priced.

Berry's (Dow) crusted - bottles £76.50/6 = £12.75ea.

- a fair 'everyday' price, but nothing to jump at - the 'normal' price (£95.70) is way over the odds.

SW97 - half case (6 bts) £148.80 = £24.80 ea.

- a fair retail price, but 30% more than you'd pay at auction

Cockburn '67 - half case (6 bts) £336.00 = £56ea.

- 40th birthday market must have been a bit lame this year! Reduced from £70/btl, but can be secured at auction for around £40

Nacional 1963, $2950 to you sir

Saw something today that I have never seen before: on display, in a shop, for sale, retail, Nacional 1963. $2950 to you sir, at 67 Wines on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

They also have a handy-dandy vertical of Andresen Colheita (vintages I didn’t note, and seemingly not on their website).

You know, that's actually not a bad price. Winesearcher low retail in the UK has this being offered for £1500-1600 plus VAT.

Still, I've spent all my money for 2008 already, so it won't be me that's buying it. :(

Perhaps foolishly, I told them it’s not bad as recent UK auction prices had been about £1k. (Though one has to add NY’s 8.625% sales tax which isn’t included in the price.)

Slightly upsetting to see the bottle standing though.

Andresen 1982 colheita

Laithwaites shops are selling Andresen's 1982 colheita (bottled 2007) for £23, normal price, and discounted to £20 today.

The shop I went into today had this available for tasting and it is an astonishly good wine for this price. I don't buy a lot of colhaita, but this was an incredible wine and represents an extremely good Quality / Price Ratio in my opinion.

I've bought some and will post a tasting note later today.

How can you have spent it all in 6 days? Or are you going to claim you've no money for Port at all?

Wondering about with the wife, who was considering spending money on frivolities, we stumbled across Soho Wines. The list showed Burmester 1977 at $90, and one bottle was standing. I rummaged amongst the lying bottles, and found another, but priced at $75. I explained to the cashier the ambiguity, but was sold it at the cheaper price. Along with a Silval 1995 ($40+tax), and a Offley Boa Vista 1985 ($55+tax). Alas none of the Quarles Harris 1985 at $45 could be found.

Those New Yorkers who have asked me for a place to buy port would do well to start at Soho Wines.

Port at Waitrose, UK

For those in the UK, Waitrose are currently discounting the Noval 10 Year tawny by 25%, down to £12.55. I've no idea if this is a good price or not.

The other port in Waitrose that caught my eye was the Waitrose own label LBV 2001 from the Symingtons for £8.49 a bottle - less 5% if you buy 6.

And Tesco have the Noval 2001 Unfiltered LBV for £9.99, less 5% if you buy 6 or more.

I tried this at the Noval shop in VNG three days ago - very pale and not terribly impressive - I'd give it a miss at that price.

Do you ever spot cheap ones, or does that simply not happen in America?

That Sandemans 60, and Cockburn 63 I recently aquired, for just under £40 each, would appear a steal compared to the prices which keep getting posted.

That's my finding as well. I think i got the Qd Bom. for 35 up here, but regardless the low quantity and perceived elitism of Port/"Old wine" keep prices astronomical. I'd like to say tariffs were a factor, but they don't affect the prices of all wine this way.

Soho wines was actually the most reasonable i've seen in a while, but one of my friends tackled me when i went for the third bottle. No port was lost in the process (though my cellar is sadder as a result).
