Could you please clarify something regarding the Canais 09?

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to taste it at The Big Fortified Tasting last month when I visited Henry and Tim on your stand. My recollection is that they told me that the Canais was such a small quantity that it would be "library stock only", with no intention for it to be released now or in the future. They did mention that Bomfim and Malvedos would be released in a decade or so and the Warre, Vesuvio and Dow Reibera being released imminently.

Have I got the story wrong on the Canais?

Regards

Derek
Paul Symington wrote:Hi Derek,

You have it right, the Canais 2009 is library stock. It will be used for tastings and so that we can make internal evaluations for the Quinta's wines over the years.

So the quantity is very small and it will never be released commercially.

Best,

Paul
An interesting reference in Richard Mayson's review of the deep Cockburn vertical that the Symingtons held last year....of the 106 cases of Cockburn 2009 Canais made, 100 have apparently been shipped to Australia...

Ah.. It was one of these. The page even lists a merchant that was to sell this.

Intriguingly, the Vintage Port Site suggests that the port is ageing in the cellars and not currently offered for sale, before quoting R Mayson's factoid about Australia verbatim!

Time to ask RM directly where his information came from, I think. He presumably didn't just make that up off the top of his head..?

A little bird told me today that 100 cases did end up in Oz.

I have no idea. The little bird is Portuguese, so wouldn't know what has become of them.

Indeed, as I noticed. So.. the question remains.. WHERE ARE THEY? SInce, somehow, these cases were not fitted with a tracking device, nor instructed to call home when they could, it appears that they have disappeared into the outback.. This is like Picnic At Hanging Rock.. 100 cases of port can't just disappear.. CAN THEY???

I went looking and I have found the 2008 Cockburn's Quinta dos Canais. Coincidence? Perhaps. However, I think it was the 2008 that was shipped Down Under.
