I would rule out 1980 on the basis there were 37 declarations, almost all of which were the shippers classic blends.

1984 had 19 declarations, mostly SQVPs

Okay... to the best of my knowledge, none of the above guesses are in the correct genre (I'm not familiar with some of the films). Most films, however, could be fit into more than one genre and this one is no exception. Its most obvious and classically defined genre has not been guessed, though it could be argued that it and some of the above films could be classified together in some ways.

Were there really that many movies made in 1993? It was a popular movie, though not a blockbuster. It never ranked higher than 3rd in the weekly box office numbers.

It is possible that the missing genre is one that Europeans may not think of often. I think it's one that most Americans should be familiar with, however.

G-man did notice one other clue, but either got it backwards or took it too far depending on how he arrived at his guess.

And yes, that is itself another clue.
