In a comparative mode (against the 97) this has a thinner and somewhat closed nose. It is sweet, the mouth shows initially a lift of black fruit without following through to the aftertaste which is medium in length . It is generally lighter and slightly hot/alcoholic, I am not sure how it will develop in the future. Dia- 88/100- 24/02/2016

80% opacity, deep dark red. My notes say "very like the '97...bit more tannic".

V98 85% opacity. At first taste I thought this was even better than the 97. But after a few more tastes, it showed it lacked the structure, silkiness and finish compared to the 97. The fruits were huge, and it was beautifully sweet, which made the initial taste so good. A lovely port though and I will be looking forward to trying this again soon.

This was the surprise of the night for me and I actually ended up being more impressed with this port than with the 1997.

Dark red, late youth, just transparent at the centre. Sweet fruit, a little unfocused on the nose but the entry is generous with plenty of voluptuous fruit balanced by toasty tannins that give a lovely structure. Very clean and focused palate; mouthfilling, rounded and very fine with a terrific elegance. The finish has the haunting violets sometimes found in Vesuvio ports. 93/100
