The Port-Project O-PORT-UNIDADE has successfully collected 100.000 Euro and transferred this amount to the Portuguese Charity Organisation Bagos Douro (Berries of the Douro), which supports underprivileged children and youngsters in the Douro Valley, one of the poorest areas in Western Europe. More information can be found at www.bagosdouro.com
On 22. September 2013 the twenty-five leading Port-CEOs and winemakers trod their grapes in a lagar to produce this very special Port. A team of the best Port-enologists met regularly and overlooked the maturation until bottling in the highest quality category: Vintage Port.
The idea of this project resulted from the Geman wine journalist Axel Probst. Axel was looking for a very special picture for his German book on Port, which will be released this year (ISBN: 3938839279). As the most typical picture on Port is a random group of workers treading grapes, Probst wanted to have the “Port VIPs” all together in a lagar. After thorough discussions with the Producers the Production of a unique Port and the Charity aspect complemented the project. Axel was very happy about the high amount of support from the Producers and institutions, above all from Dirk Niepoort. “Without Dirk volunteering to offer his production site in Vale Mendiz and taking the overall lead from the Producer’s site, this Project would not have been possible”, says Probst.
A total of 5.000 bottles were produced and twenty Euros per bottle were transferred to bagos douro. The General Director of the Organisation, Luisa Amorim is very happy about the volume of the donation: ”With the money we are able to finance special education-programmes to increase the chances of our children in the future”.
This Vintage Port is special not only because of its story, but also for having received very special ratings from respected journalists all over the world. Besides 94 Parker Points, more critiques can be found here: www.o-port-unidade.com/Press.html
