1977 Graham (Tappit Hen)
An oversize crowd—possible because the bottles were all Magnums and Tappit Hens—gathered on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at the Boot and Flogger, to taste these large-format 1977s.

60% opacity, dark red, orange brown rim. Sweet nose, sugared sherbet. Sweet entry, fruit, strawberries. Very sugared, lacking acidity.

The Tappit Hen acquired ex-cellars in 2014, originally intended to be used for Dirk Niepoort's 50th birthday party. Burnished red in colour with a rose rim, 60% opaque. Little on the nose other than some fresh dock leaf. Smooth entry with dusty tannins giving balance to the sweet fruit, which is fresh and delicious. There is some heat on the aftertaste, which precedes a long and flavoursome finish. This is a very fine port which is still very youthful in this format and which will hold for many more years yet. 92/100. Decanted 4 hours.
