Tuesday 19th December - 77@40

Post by CPR 1 »

Thread poster changed from uncle tom to CPR 1 on Thu 07 Sep 2017 by jdaw1.

With the Xmas bash pencilled in for Dec 21st, how about a repeat of the last two years, with a tasting on the prior Tuesday and an elegant luncheon on the Wednesday at Ottos?

With 67@50 already scheduled, 77@40 seems a logical choice. I (Tom) have seventeen '77s, although I would prefer not to be the sole supplier.

Are people game? - or is there a better idea out there..? As the dates are hard on Xmas, I think we should get our reservations in pronto..

Now confirmed:-

1) Tom - Delaforce, Morgan, Offley
2) MPM - Taylor, Smith Woodhouse
3) Axel - Kopke
4) CPR - Sandeman, Croft, Quarles Harris, Niepoort (sent by Dirk)
5) SCD
6) AHB - Cockburn (Old)
7) JDAW - Gould Campbell
8) DRL - Graham
9) TC - Dow
10) PW - Fonseca, Factory House
11) IDJ - Warre
12) WS1
13) WS1 +1
14) Nicos Neocleous (NN) - buying-in

Reserves
1)

Line up now confirmed, we have 16 shippers,

1. Fonseca - PW
2.Taylor - MPM
3. Dow - TC
4. Warre - IDJ
5. Graham - DRL
6. Gould Campbell - JDAW
7. Quarles Harris - CPR
8. Sandeman - CPR
9. Niepoort - EDN
10. Offley - THRA
11. Delaforce - THRA
12. Smith Woodhouse - MPM
13. Cockburn (old) - AHB
14. Croft - CPR
15, Morgan - THRA
16. Kopke - Axel
17. Ferreria - CPR
18. Factory House blend - PW

Food order.

Current draft of the placemats.

I'd never say no to a '77 horizontal Tom! I am though likely to find it difficult to pack too much in during that week before Christmas week. I'll hang back for now and if the date gets off the ground then I'll stand by as a reserve!

I would be in, hoping there might be something in between the 19th and 21st.

I have also been considering a deeper horizontal of the 1977's. We had a limited range at the 77 Magnum and Tappit Hen tasting in February and I would like to taste a wider range side by side, thus I am in whatever the date and can contribute most shippers.

We have the Gould Campbell tasting in October, but November is empty at the moment I believe. On balance I would suggest this might fit better in November so as not to get overshadowed with rushing about before Xmas?

I would like to come along whenever this maybe held, but at this stage would need to look at adoption if possible.

While I do very much like the '77s and would thoroughly enjoy an evening dedicated to the vintage, I think it would be remiss to point out that we could also choose to do 2007 @ 10, 1997 @ 20, 1987 @ 30, 1957 @ 60, 1937 @ 80, 1927 @ 90, 1917 @ 100, 1897 @ 120, 1887 @ 130 or 1847 @ 170.

On balance, I think 1977 @ 40 a sensible proposal - I'm in.

Worryingly, it seems that I have drunk many of my unusual '77s. On hand and in bottle format I only have the usual suspects (Cockburn, Dow, Graham, Warre).

The timing is deliberately set to tie in with the Xmas bash and the 'elegant lunch' on the intervening day.

The grouping of three events is appreciated by those travelling from further afield.

Can people contributing bottles please deliver them to the B&F in advance, I will contact people shortly re sorting the costs.

To make more table space, I’ve reduced the space per glass: 15 on A3, and 3 on ½×A4. Please comment whether too small: Circle radius = 118.978pt, so diameter ≈ 3.30″ ≈ 83.9mm.

Unfortunately Dirk can't make this now but has still very kindly offered to provide a bottle of Niepoort. CMAG has thus been promoted from the reserves.

This now leaves us with 'just' 16 bottles for 14 people. Any views on adding some of these to the line up; Kopke San Luiz (Current bottle labelled as simply Kopke, does anyone know if they produced both or just different labels?) Pocas, Ferreira or a special Factory House blend?

Am not aware of a straight Kopke in '77 (but don't know for sure that there isn't).

My choice would be to first include the Ferreira (lovely wine), then the Factory House (as we will likely taste all its components alongside).

Excellent decision made Ferreira and Factory House added. We have 1 vacant seat as CMAG can't make this, first post updated.

For those attending can you please post your food order, usual menu and a Xmas special to choose from. I will send PM re costs this week.

Have we one Niepoort, or three? Are we at twenty glasses? Has the B&F been told?

If Mike is printing, then the placemats can be on a trimmed A2, which will use less space than A3+A4. Is he?

All checked, looks correct.
Only differences from first post are lack of CMAG in attendee list (but believed correct from above posts), and Ferreira and Factory House are present in ports list with correct supplier, but have not been added against attendees.

Do we have a spare seat at the '77 tasting? There are a couple of people I met yesterday who might be interested in joining us if that is the case.

My food order:
No starter
Roast Turkey main
Probably no desert on the night (but if I have one it will likely be the Lemon and Ginger Cheesecake — if I have one)
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
