Direction of branding: along versus around?

Do people have strident views on whether corks should be branded along or around?

Yes.
Along is better in my opinion as you have more chance of finding some traces of the branding on a broken cork.
...and just because I prefer it aesthetically.

If the branding goes around the top, it is more likely to be whole. But cork direction is effectively random, so such a cork is as likely to have the name at the wetter end. So branding around both ends would be best. Failing which, for Derek’s reason, along. But if branding is along, please, on both sides.
