1989 Quinta do Vesuvio
Bottle 29 650. Mid red colour, full of mature brick tones; 50% opaque. Nosing of Douro bake, full of warm rubber bands. The slight rubbery tone comes through on the fruit on the palate, or perhaps there is a little bottle stink. Behind the rubbery tone is sweet red cherry fruit, ripe and elegant and with a dry core. Although this is a light Port, it has a nice elegance. The rubberiness from the Douro bake dominates the aftertaste before a long finish, although it is a finish dominated by heat and the bake. 85/100. 13-Feb-19. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2022: Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931. I have never drunk such a wonderful bottle of Port. I cried with joy.
2023: Fonseca 1966. There are not many better Ports.
