I dined tonight at a pretty good and imaginative restaurant (the first so far). Good wine list. They go to the length of stocking Martinez 63. Good. Full marks for effort.

£235 per bottle. Does anyone else think this gives vintage port a bad name?

Yes, such prices are ludicrous, but to be fair, it probably falls in line with the shocking 400% mark up of a lot of the Hotel Wine Lists.

Don't feel bad, here in the states prices at restaurants are crazy high.. I once saw Fonseca Bin 27 for $60 bottle...now that was crazy!

Ha, yeah, I organized my brother's bachelor party and we went out to a fine Strip steak House in NYC. He's also into Port, but when I saw the prices they had on plonk, I plotzed! We spent $80 on what should have been a $20 bottle of average red, then went somewhere cheaper for drinks.

In the posh Indian Restaurant Quilon, 41 Buckingham Gate SW1E 6AF, +44 20 7821 1899 Pintas 2005, Warre Otima 20Y, each at £60 a bottle

La Trompette, Chiswick. (Took advantage of free corkage offer in association with Farr Vintners).

On prominent display on table immediately upon entering, two splendid (one full, one in the process of being emptied) 4.5l bottles of Graham's 10YO Tawny. Glass (£9.50, 75ml) poured at table very theatrically. Sommelier keen to get Graham's 20YO next, also in large bottle. Customers like port, but often need a gentle reminder, and so much better to finish a meal with than coffee.

I neglected to take a picture, but we had dinner at John Howie Steak in Bellevue and they had Fonseca Bin 27 on the menu... for $72/bottle.

The Malvedos is the best priced one on that list. Six Grapes at $38 is almost as bad as Glenn's Bin 27 price.

The Malvedos struck me as the best too. Six grapes and even Noval LBV rather too much. The wine list is constructed to make less margin on more expensive bottes, and the food is excellent at a more than fair price, so I can forgive them.

I disagree. Free corkage in association with Farr Vintners is the best value. I have an account with Farrs - do I just call Farrs and ask them to arrange it for me?

Yes free corkage is always a good thing.

Agree free corkage a great deal. Available until 11 sept. La Trompette, Chez Bruce and The Glasshouse. One bottle free, other bottles attract corkage. 6 people Chez Bruce 8 the others. 7 days lunch or dinner Sun-Fri. Email reservation to restaurant and copy Yvonne@farrvintners.com. Must be a Farr account holder. Pleased the Sommelier raised his eyebrows in appreciation of the Alsace Riesling we took . Gets the meal off to a good start.
