Warre's Sesquarcentennial Tasting - Weds 6th Oct 2021 (date confirmed)

Post by nac »

To celebrate Warre's 350th anniversary, I thought it would be appropriate to organise a vertical tasting. Given the potentially large number of bottles available I suggest this is initially limited to 2000 and earlier.

Venue - Red Room, Boot & Flogger

Attendees & confirmed bottles:
  1. NAC - 1963, 1970
  2. AHB
  3. MPM
  4. GEAG - 1960
  5. TC - 1945, 1946
  6. CPR - 1942
  7. WPS - 1958
  8. IDJ - 1947
  9. DRL
  10. Axel P
  11. THRA - 1922, 1966, 1975
  12. Anthony Symington - 1977 in Tappit Hen
  13. William Symington - 1955
  14. Ben Read
Bottles (bottler info etc where available):
  1. 1922 (Robinson & Payne) - THRA
  2. 1942 - CPR
  3. 1945 - TC
  4. 1946 - TC
  5. 1947 - IDJ
  6. 1955 - The Symingtons
  7. 1958 - WPS via THRA
  8. 1960 - GEAG
  9. 1963 (Mayor Sworder) - NAC
  10. 1966 (Mayor Sworder) - THRA
  11. 1970 (Oporto?) - NAC
  12. 1975 - THRA
  13. 1977 (Tappit Hen) - The Symingtons
Current draft of the placemats (revisit of the design of 2 Oct 2009).

Yes please, I think I could make this one. I have a 1970 VP or a wildcard of a 1974 LBV (a previous bottle from the same source was delicious).

Would like to join too. Also would suggest you add the 2017 as a very young great addition as it is a Warre taste that should also be present at such a tasting.

Given you're first on the reserve list, I'd suggest there's a fairly high probability you'll get bumped up. As such, probably worth letting me know potential wine availability...

As it is now almost 100% certain that we won't be able to have this tasting on the planned date, I'm proposing that it moves to Tuesday 20th October. I'll confirm this with B&F once it reopens, but suggest we go with this for now.

I'll update the header to reflect this change.

Will assume that all attendees are still available unless told otherwise.

Following some discussions with other attendees have decided to hold off on this until we're in a position to more comfortably hold a tasting for 14 people and all are happy to attend.

May need to slide this into 2021, but will keep updating as would obviously be more appropriate to do it in the 350th anniversary year.

I suspect it will need to be next year given likelihood of current Covid progression and restrictions. I would certainly prefer to push it back in order to able to hold a deep Warre vertical as intended, even if that means it is not this year (which doesn't necessarily preclude a smaller event this year as well, but I would suggest saving the rare bottles for the full event - which might be both necessary as well as pragmatic, to achieve such a line-up).

Have added you to the reserve list.

Obviously subject to future rules, but have been thinking that we might want to extend this beyond 14 people. There's already a few people on the reserve list and potentially considerably more than 14 bottles available. Let's see what happens...

Suggested date for this in now Wednesday 6th October 2021 @ B & F, Red Room.

Could all those who were previously on the attendee list please reconfirm availability.
Also, could you please reconfirm what bottles you're offering and associated prices (PM or email me).

I've updated the top post to include a list of all the "normal" vintages from 1900 to 2000, of which there are 29.

Clearly it isn't practical/possible/affordable to get all of these, but guess we should be aiming for 15ish bottles if we are a party of 14? I propose that we extend past 2000 if we can't get enough bottles or the costs become prohibitive.

I'll update the list as people let me know what's available and start to work out the per head cost.

Thoughts?

I reconfirm.

Can I suggest that we adopt the approach taken for the Croft Vertical held in Boston on 8th February 2008? For that tasting each person was asked to contribute one "old" bottle and one "young" bottle (of at least 21 years of age), each in good condition with good colour, high fill and no signs of leakage.

In 2008 the definition of "old" was set as 1955 or older. 13 years later a threshold of vintage 1966 or earlier might be appropriate. That would give us 14 vintages from the range 1896-1966 and 14 from 1970-2000. Even if the older vintages proved disappointing, the inclusion of relatively cheap, younger and more reliable vintages would give us all something to enjoy.

I will PM you what I can offer.

I recall ’63 being the youngest of the deemed “old”. But that might be a mis-recollection.
