Tony and the team at Vintage Wine & Port are doing a fundraiser Quevedo Port tasting on the 7/8th May in support of NHS and Portuguese charities. The tasting pack is £99 for 6 x 375ml bottles for a Taste at Home tutored tasting with Oscar on YouTube Live. This is also done in association with the great folks at the b.f.t.

Ahem! This event is being jointly organised by the Big Fortified Tasting as well as by Vintage Wine & Port. We might not be able to bring you a masterclass at the show this year, but we can bring you a masterclass online.

Although, I freely admit, Tony and the team in Fordingbridge are doing all the hard work.

Just saw this! I'm interested, certainly seems like an interesting selection of port wines to try.

A great effort so far between Oscar, the BFT team and VWP. It's an experiment - so fingers crossed that it will work, that everyone enjoys it, and that we raise a little money for charity along the way.

My halves have arrived safely. Some really thoughtful additional touches. Delighted to see the familiar style of placemats (laminated!) and tasting notes sheet. Plus the invitation to a glass of port in Portugal when this is all over. Looking forward to it!

On the assumption that Youtube live is essentially one-way (video/audio from Oscar to us, none to him - possibly messaging?), shall we Zoom in parallel?

I'm up for that, but there may be too many of us for it to be wieldy.

How about a Zoom ‘after party’ debrief?

Oscar will be open to questions during the tasting, delivered to him by the YouTube chat function.

Absolutely nothing to stop some / all of us from zooming in parallel. If too many for one Zoom, we can run parallel Zoom sessions.

Mine arrived safe and sound today, I didn’t spot the placemats, I’ll have to have a rummage and find them! I hadn’t spotted the pack included free glasses so that was a rather excellent bonus.

I’m definitely keen to be included on a zoom. I don’t believe there’s a limit to how many you can include, just a time limit unless someone has paid for a subscription.

UPDATE : After testing during last night's zoom, it was decided NOT to run a parallel zoom due to various issues including practicality of listening to both Oscar and each other, and the potential for Oscar's audio being relayed through mics unless everyone is muted or uses headphones.

The preference instead was to have a zoom afterwards, which Mike has offered to host in the usual way (I've updated the list above for reference, and assume Mike will send out the invite to all interested including all usual suspects). If there are >9 people, Mike can auto-split us into 2 (or more) separate breakout sessions; we checked this and it worked fine last night also.

The serving temperature guide for tawny/colheita port is approx 10-12 degrees c. Personally I think you can go a bit colder. I will take the port out of the fridge about 15 mins before and pour. They should get up to the perfect temperature for the start. I am sure others will have very different view points.

I prefer to drink tawny Port warmer than 10-12 C. Just slightly cooler than the room is my preference, so probably closer to 17-18 C assuming I'm doing the conversion in my head correctly.

That said, serving tawny Port at 10-12 C works because then the Port can warm up slowly and you can drink it wherever along the continuum best suits your preference.

Enjoyed Oscar's tasting last night and have now just decanted the two VPs for this evening (the 2005 threw quite a bit of sediment, suggesting a degree of maturity). The LBV is stoppered and will leave the decanting until a bit later.

Haven't seen Oscar's e-mail but personally I'd prefer a longer decant, particularly for the SQVP (which took quite a while to fully filter) and even though these are half bottles. Interestingly , the details on the label suggest that the LBV is also single Quinta and from the same Quinta and so, looking forward to that comparison.

I'm not really expecting the 18s to have much to filter, but we'll see; the 05 will need it ofc. I'm going to decant this morning, rather than later.

Last night was jolly fun. Reading the discussion above, have just pulled the corks on tonight's wines. Looking forward to it!

I very much enjoyed the last two evenings, certainly a really interesting selection of Quevedo ports showing the quality in their range. The 2005 VP was definitely a highlight, but I was also impressed with the LBV as a very decent potential cellar defender.

I’m just revisiting the 2013 SQVP from last night and imho it’s better tonight than it was yesterday, the tannins have softened but the fruit is still very much at large, showing more ripe plums now than yesterday’s red fruit.

@ idj123 - I am doing the same. The Special Reserve (my favourite on the first night) perhaps fading a little. The Colheita 2004 much improved by a couple of days of air, some mirabelle plum on the nose, walnuts and caramel on the palate, with a delightful gentle warmth on the finish
