2018 Dow Senhora da Ribeira

A snapshot tasting.
This is a small property of 25 hectares, longest Symington family farmed property (along with Bomfim) acquired in 1912 (sold in the 1950s and bought back in 1998). Co-fermented for the first time, Alicante Bouschet and Sousao has been used as a component for this wine. Blend is 45% TF, 40% TN, 15% co-fermented AB / Sousao. Low yield year with around 1kg of grapes per vine. A typical Dow vintage blend would use 25% Senhora da Ribeira, 60% Bomfim with the balance coming from elsewhere within the SFE portfolio - all grapes used in the SFE vintage ports come from SFE estates.
Very dark purple with a narrow rim. Esteva and red peppercorn on the nose, very fragrant, very herbal. Amazing texture, giving the impression of a slight thickness. Concentrated liquid violets wrapped around a big, powerful and overtly tannic structure. Multiple layers of flavour really reward patience in keeping the wine on the palate. The palate is astonishing with a huge aftertaste full of fruity dark chocolate. Astonishing. A massive Port, big and brusque. Day 1: 93-95/100. 02-Jun-20. Open ½ hour.
