At New York’s lunch time tomorrow, that being Thursday 20th March 2008, I will decant a bottle of port for unfancy family drinking in the evening. Should the port be Graham’s 1980 or Ramos Pinto 1985?

Background: we have enjoyed several RP85s in the last few months, and have two remaining. But, in contrast, G80 has been a stranger to the Wisemans’ palates, our one bottle in New York having only recently been transported here from the UK.

Your collective call.

I'm voting for you to drink the RP85 only because the G80 may feature in the May offline.

The May O&O tasting in New York? Methinks not.

The Wokingham-located tasting that might be a Graham’s vertical? That won’t be featuring any NY-located bottles. (Happily, there is more G80 in Sussex.)

Not had that one and curious. May get round to the Ramos Pinto one day, but not a priority.

I voted G80 because you have had RP85 many times and it therefore holds no surprises.

Interestingly, G80 has the highest chance out of all ports ever produced of appearing at the Offline at AHB's house in Wokingham.

No. Regardless of whether or not the Jdaw G80 is transported the G80 is likely to be there as it is the only VP that can exist within both of the suggested themes.

Well, we could have a Graham’s vertical without the 1980; and we could have a 1980 horizontal without Graham’s. We could. But I suspect that we won’t.

Poll closed a few hours before it should. I was saving my vote until late, and would have voted G80. The wife’s has the casting vote, and she favours the RP85. So Ramos Pinto 1985 it is.

I note but do not comment on the slightly unusual use of the apostrophe above, but would only observe that one should refer to the full context to understand its use in the quote that I have extracted.

Another brain-out from Wiseboy. Not a good week for the resident pedant. That should be quoted, with some smugness, in the Apostrophe thread.

I would actually argue in favour of this unusual use of the apostrophe. On the reasonable assumption that JDAW knows how to use an appostrophe, I took "The wife's has the casting vote..." to have the implied meaning of "The wife's vote has the casting vote..." hence my reference not to comment further.

So, I was going to forgive and move on.

No. I must have changed my mind about a passive “the wife’s vote was casting†, decided I didn’t like that, and failed to make the switch completely.

Go for the Grahams or wait on the Grahams until I am in NYC or you in Boston.

Either one is a splendid choice.
