I just discovered a another bullshit on the german ebay site. Someone is selling a bottle of 73 Noval LBV and a bottle of 82 Flagman VP. He says that the bottles were stored upright in perfect condition.

Someone post a question saying that he doesnt know a lot about port, but he thought these bottles should be stored vertically. The answer was, that the bottles were stored upright due to the high alcoholic content which would ruin the cork in time and that would subsequently have a bad effect on the taste.

I've had heard from many people that same exact logic, that port should be stored upright but not necessarily the alcohol reason.

I was wondering about the origins of such.

Thinking back on the old shipping days, you'd probably store bottles on the ship upright and tie it up, to perhaps keep bottles from rolling around.

A store would see obvious benefits of storing upright, allowing consumers to see the bottles without pulling them out.

I personally had a few ports from the 70s where the cork has been seeped all the way through even if the cork was completely intact.

It's still a mystery to me who came up with such idea.

I know that in Denmark you recieved pipes in the 1960 and bolted it here in Denmark.

I'm not sure of the exact date, but since the mid-1970's the IVDP rules require all port to be bottled in either Vila Nova de Gaia or in the Douro. Prior to that, bottling could be done in either Vila Nova de Gaia or the port could be shipped in bulk to the destination country and bottled there.

It was the shipper and merchant's choice whether to ship in bulk or in bottle.

Indeed, until 1972 (i.e. harvest year 1970 for a VP) port was allowed to be bottled outside the Douro/Vila Nova de Gaia.

I do not want to sound like someone who know better, but I think I read 74 a couple of times. So the last Vintage to be bottled as well outside of Vila Nova was 70 and the first generally declared Vintage to be bottled solely in Vila Nova was 75.

I have a case of 80 Ferreira that was stored upright since being imported on release and the bottles are ok. The port is quite light looking and tawny like which I thought was attibuted to the storage, but Roy said this is a light port to begin with and I may have any damage to the bottles after his description.

Assuming the temperature was ok, I would take a chance on those bottles if the price was right. How does the fill look?

Judging by the back of that first bottle on ebay, it looks like the shipper was the Douro Wine Shippers’ and Growers’ Association which I think mostly produce[s/d?] Port for own-brand retailers.
