Re: Port producers and brands

Post by jdaw1 »

In the previous post is a draft of a list of Port producers and brands. It was created by merging the various threads listing each year’s declarations (2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 + the list of Port House abbreviations). Attempts have been made to correct spelling and remove duplicates.

Links have been added, mostly taken from github.com/jdaw1/placemat/blob/main/PostScript/ExternalLinks_data.ps.

Doubtless there are many errors, both of omission and of commission. Errors likely include omissions; duplicates; spelling and accents; wrong da/das/de/do preposition; inconsistent presence or absence of “Quinta d…”; incorrect or inconsistent grouping by corporate owner; URLs incorrect or rotted or missing; and others.

Please post error reports in this thread; corrections will happen, even if not immediately. Error reports should refer to Ports by name, not by number, as the numbering will change as names are added or merged. Those with the powers to change my post should treat it as a wiki rather than as an owned post.

Quoting all or much this list will make long unwieldy posts. Please don’t.

Just to clarify: should I mention names that should have "Quinta" (like Fonseca [Quinta do] Panascal)?

I think I got them all, but obviously more eyeballs on this is better than less.

Dow Quinta do Bomfim
Graham Quinta dos Malvedos
Cockburn Quinta dos Canais
Warre Quinta da Cavadinha

Fonseca Quinta do Panascal
Taylor Quinta de Terra Feita [although the label has both "Terra Feita" and "Quinta de Terra Feita", so I suppose either is acceptable]
Taylor Quinta de Vargellas [same argument as Terra Feita]

Barros Quinta da Galeira
Kopke Quinta de São Luiz
Burmester Quinta do Arnozelo
Cálem Quinta da Foz [accent is on the "a"; also added "quinta"]

Alves de Sousa Quinta da Gaivosa

Dona Matilde from Barão de Vilar [forgot the tilde]

Kranemann (Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias) [forgot the accent on Águias]

Magalhães (tasted by Roy Hersh on 22 Jun 2018) [tilde]

Niepoort (and Morgadio da Calçada) ["da" instead of "de"]

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Ramos Pinto (and Quinta da Ervamoira, and Quinta do Bom Retiro)

Rozès (and São Pedro das Águias, and Quinta do GriFo) [accent, and "Quinta"]

SJ from Quinta de São José [accent]

São Leonardo from Quinta do Mourão ["quinta", not "quinto"]

Vieira de Sousa (and Água Alta) [accent on Água; I've seen both Água Alta and Quinta da Água Alta, so I suppose either is acceptable]

Quinta do Cadão [tilde]

[You have both Crasto and Quinta do Crasto, not sure if that's intended]

Quinta Vale Dona Maria

Quinta do Noval (and Nacional, and Silval, and Quinta do Marco)

Quinta Dona Otília [accent]

Quinta do Pôpa [accent]

Quinta de São José [accent]

Quinta do Silval from Magalhães [tilde]

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo [you already had "Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo", unsure if it was intended]

Quinta do Portal ["quinta", not "quinto"; also, I think it's a repeat]

Quinta de São José (announced at the New Douro Tasting) [accent]

Quinta de Vale Dona Maria [again, repeat]

From my records.

Adams (1963 VP at TPF 30+ Initial Offline at Portal (Date: 2008-11-21))
Azul (single glass of 10YOT; First Great Western Pullman dining car. (Date: 2015-03-12))
Caves de Santa Marta (single glass of pink pre-2009)
Encostas de Provezende Quinta dos Espinheiros (small shop near Provezende selling tawnies & aged whites; no selos; not sure if any of this is officially made).
Fim de Século (bottle of 2007 LBV at home. (Date: 2014-07-25))
Fragulho (Bought at Vinologia: one of a few dusty halves of 20 Year Old Tawny they had left. Bottled in 2011 (i.e. six years before drinking) with a t-cork. The shipper is an independent producer from Cheires (just North East of Sabrosa on the far side of the Pinhão river). (Date: 2017-09-18)).
Heritage. (May also be called “Porto Heritage”. Had a glass of 2015 VP at Vinologia. Made by Família Correia dos Santos. (Date: 2020-09-14)).
Quinta da Casa Amarela (I think this used to be the Lidl “house port” back in 2008-9. I’ve tried a white and ruby. Both were dreadful).
Quinta da Colmaça (2003 VP at TPF “Bring a Bottle” tasting (Date: 2011-03-10))
Quinta da Silveira (my notes are that the 10YOT was the house port at the Boot & Flooger in 2016).
Quinta da Trovisca (bottle of 2000 colheita, bottled 2013 at home. (Date: 2016-05-30))
Quinta do Retiro Novo (2005 VP at home. (Date: 2017-01-30) + 2007 in Vinologia in 2010).
Quinta dos Corvos (they have a wine bar in VndG. I had the 20 YO Tawny + White; the 30 YOT; and the 2013 LBV).
Réccua (2004 LBV at home pre-2009; basic tawny in Douro Museum in 2017 and in a food court in Porto this year).
Schofield (1907 VP at TPF Christmas Tasting 2008 (Date: 2008-12-18))
Vasconcellos (they have a shop on the waterfront in VndG. I tried the 30 YOT this year).
Whytingham (2001 VP. Produced by Quinta do Vale Meão for Selfridge’s.)

Also, Casa de Santa Eufémia is now a separate producer from the Quinta.

And I think you are missing the following accents:

Magalhães
Quinta de Sâo José
Quinta do Vale de Dona Maria

JacobH: good to see you. Some of these really are UK wine merchants. Should the list include Tesco and Sainsbury’s? (And this is a question; answers sought.) When that decided I’ll go through your list and add them.

A minor note; I approve of the terminology of this thread, being producers and brands (c.f. nomenclature of shippers when discussion abbreviations elsewhere, where I think we also meant brands; "the book" might be thus affected also).

I think, in the list I produced, there's only a couple of wine merchants: Schofield and Adams. All of the others are, I think, actual companies with the exception of Whytingham.

To answer your question, I don't know where the line should be drawn. Take Whytingham. This was created for Selfridge's. It's effectively a BoB. But it was clearly aimed at looking like a proper shipper.

The difficulty is that I am not sure how this (assuming it is a bespoke blend) differs from, say, Smith Woodhouse or other brands which are part of a larger company. It's even more striking with Quarles Harris since I think the most releases have been made for Trader Joe's. Perhaps the fact that they were separate historically is enough to distinguish then?

I think perhaps exclude supermarkets' own (Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury's) as what juice goes in them is a function of which shippers will sell them some excess bottles of port. They are not shippers or bottlers, they are labellers. I think we exclude labellers.

I think we should discuss this over bottles of some of the more contentious candidates. Such as the Sainsbury's (Quinta Dona Matilde) 1985 of which I have a bottle.

No: not that one. After an incredibly long wild goose chase, I eventually tracked them down here. They seem to be based at Quinta Vale do Seixo and are aiming at the French market.

This is odd. Without the accent I'd read that word in a completely different way (plus, the word "Eufémia" is a woman's name, and it has the accent). But it is what it is, if they don't use it, they don't use it.

Perhaps an addition or two...
Augusto https://www.portoaugustos.pt/ (with grapes from Devesa and Estanho). Unsure if they actually blend it themselves)

Osmann (might just be French BoB but kind odd to have one as a colheita? See below)

I’m sure we’ve discussed this before and even emailed the owners to find the answer. There was also a period of time when they spelt it with a circumflex: Eufêmia.

The other branch of the family’s website has disappeared at the end of 2019 but seemed to spell like Casa Santa Eufémia was always spelt with an accent according to what is preserved on archive.org.
