George Sandeman, one of the people tasting this wine, suggested that this was one of the brands under the Barros portfolio.

Douro Wine Shippers and Growers Association 1963 VP. Good rich mature red, 50% opaque. High toned fruit, a little VA but with mature fruit. Wonderful mature fruit on the palate, redcurrant jelly and a touch of heat. Red liquorice and aniseed of the aftertaste, moving to a sweet red jelly finish. Delicious, mature red fruit. Lovely. 92/100. Drunk 26-Sep-21. Decanted 3 hours.

i am reaching out today as I was offered to sell 6 bottles of the Vintage port.
The bottles are in great condition considering the age - but don't have any paper work attached.
The wines are currently not offered any where online, so I was thinking this is a. great place to start.

What do you think the bottles are worth at this moment? thanks for getting back to me.

As mentioned in your other post. I still own a number of these and have had a number. They are past best but pleasant. Though nothing to write home about. I’d say roughly $80/bottle is a fair price at best.

$80 for a 1963 is not very flattering.

No it's not. I think this wine is appraised quite good and the bottles are in great condition.
I believe 250 EUR sound more like the right direction for a bottle of 60+ years of age.

I'm not sure I've ever seen ANY 1963 vintage port sell for €250/bottle. Perhaps somewhere between $80 and $300 is the place

I'm not sure I've ever seen ANY 1963 vintage port sell for €250/bottle. Perhaps somewhere between $80 and $300 is the place

Most VP's grow in value - as things become more rare - so growing prices or not strange.

Most of those bottles go for 200-300 pound.
I am not saying we need to sell for 300 USD but we believe for 80 bucks - you wont find any 1963 VP's in this state.

Just because something is old, does not make it valuable.

Ruud, with the best will in the world, I am not sure you are going to find buyers here. The markets in Portugal and the UK for older wines are very different, possibly because there is still lots of it here. I can buy Fonseca 1963 - truly exceptional port - for less than £250 a bottle with full retail guarantee. The full retail guarantee is effectively equal to the dealer margin which is about 50%. I can thus buy the same port at auction for a little bit more than half that. Why would I take a punt, on this lesser shipper, at the same price?

The state of the bottles do not look as good as you claim. They just don't. Not all 1963 Ports are created equal. This is a barely known Port and based on someone who has bottles of this Port, they are past their prime, thus the $80 estimate seems much closer to their value than close to the $300 value that you're seeking. The Port Producer matters more than the age. This Producer is an off brand product by a Producer that is not known for their Vintage Port. Sorry.

Those are retail prices, and only the well-known, good Ports reach 300 GBP. Person-to-person sales are generally around 50-60% of retail, which would put you at 100-150 GBP.

But then there's the problem that this isn't a well-known, good Port. So you aren't likely to get anywhere close to 100-150 GBP for it. $80 was probably a bit harsh as an estimate, but I at least would not be interested for more than $100/bottle.

Hi all! Thanks for the input - much appreciated. Happy to see that we all can appraise the wines differently.

Of course, as a seller we are looking for the sweet spot in price. Retail prices are not what we are looking for.
If there are any buyers here - I am happy to discuss terms. Otherwise we will try and sell elsewhere. Just hoping to find a place where the wines will be enjoyed. Now they are stored and not being tasted, its a shame

I might later separate this later discussion into a separate thread and not have it attached to my tasting note.

Ruud - I might be your target market for these wines. I love Port; I was born in 1963; I like my Port fully mature.

But the question is that of price. This is a decent Port but third or maybe even fourth tier. It was a co-operative with little control over the quality of the grapes. I’ve tasted the wine and liked it, but there are many other producers I’d choose to drink over this one. If you wanted to persuade me to buy one of these bottles, I might do so at around €80 - maybe. If you wanted me to buy all of them it would have to be around €60 per bottle.

This is a producer few people know about and even fewer will give any credibility. Your best market is likely to be the on trade, but then only if sold to the restaurant for €70-80 per bottle so they can offer it on their list at a price which will not put off their customers.

In all honesty, I don’t think we’re the right market for these bottles. You might be able to place them with a distributor or importer in the US, but your best bet might be to sell them at auction.
