Recently Alex B. and I tasted GM86 and GM87. We both loved the GM86. Re the GM87, there was disagreement, I thinking it quite junior, Alex preferring it.

This suggests a theme for a tasting: one or two bottles with a Disagreement or a Controversy or a Misunderstanding.

My misunderstandings in respect of Port often lead to disagreements or controversies. This sounds like the tasting for me!

If it involves tasting the GM86 v. GM87 I'm available! I still recall the debate about these two at the Malvedos vertical in 2010. I think both were (or very close to) podium finishes that night.

Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

If anyone has a bottle of Croft 1869 it should appear at this tasting. I've searched my wine fridge but all of my Croft 1869 appears to have been stolen.

Is this likely to go ahead on 8th Nov?

Alas, I will neither be in London on 08 Nov 2022, nor do I possess both GM86 and GM87.

Both can be fixed, though the latter is considerably more likely.

I would struggle to make this after the tasting of TTF the week before, so I will need to drop out unfortunately.

It’s a fair question. Room not yet booked. Interest is underwhelming, perhaps because people scorn my theme — it happens — or because people score my date — ditto.

Let’s allow this nudge to encourage people to speak. Maybe we’ll keep the date and the theme. Maybe we’ll keep the date but change the theme. Maybe bin the whole thing.

Do I need to decide now?

Theme is good. Possibly an opportunity to open a couple of 75s? I quite like them; (some) others think they’re generally a bit rubbish.

Another "controversy" that we've discussed in the past: T85 vs F85. England seems to think that T85 is as good as - or better than - F85. Those of us in the US tend to scoff at the very idea.

I was once served this head-to-head in London and had to admit that it was one of the best T85s that I'd ever had... it was, indeed, on par with or possibly even slightly better than the F85 served at the same time. However, that F85 served was one of the worst (non-flawed) bottles that I'd ever had.

Are we getting duff T85s in the US? Or are you getting duff F85s in England?

Duff? Hell no. Both are excellent. Fifteen years ago, the Fonseca trounced the Taylor. Now, well, what to say?, without doubt, nobody could disagree, it’s clear, undoubtedly, testing is necessary.

I’m sorry, I have taken my eye off the ball here. All private rooms at the B&F are booked. Have we an alternative venue?

I could cope with a postponement - quite a lot going on, and coming up to the busy season...
