1997 Churchill

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Churchill 1997, £22 for a 100ml glass at Bar Douro. The first glass from a new bottle, extracted by Coravin. Pop and pour. Deep red with a narrow rim, no purple of youth but neither is this developing the brick tone of middle age. Dusty black cherry fruit on the nose, smooth and sweet black cherry on entry. Soft black chocolate tannins in the palate. Good acidity giving the sweet fruit a lovely freshness. Aniseed and black liquorice on the long, long finish. The 1997 from Churchill is holding up very nicely, still with plenty more to come.  92/100. Drunk 27-Oct-22. Pop 'n' pour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
