Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers

Post by hadge »

Date: Thursday 11th April 2024

Yes, I’m aware of Julian event on 9th. I have spoken to Julian and if you have already agreed to attend his event but would like to change this one then he is very happy for you to. you can attend both as well.

Time: 12:30, for bottle opening. happy to add people for just the evening if there is space, i will prioritise those that can make the lunchtime onwards.

Location: Boot & Flogger (Green Room booked but can change to Red)

Theme: Decanting Experiment

My idea (current plan) is to open either 1 or 2 tappit hens and decant them into 3 different type of decanters each, so 6 different in total, and then see how the port develops over time in each one. check after every hour and then maybe half an hour when the room views it ready. Depending on numbers there will be some extra wines to keep us going as we go along. the extra wines will be self pour.

The goal of the event,

Is to see if there is any difference in each type of decanter to the decanting time and if possible as a bonus find the optimum time in a decanter for the wine.

as this is about decanters, the voting will be types of decanter and not wine of the night. this is not about which is the best port. hopefully having some nice port to go with this idea will make it more enjoyable.

Costs: only food and NO one is to bring a bottle without clearing it with me first. I would be incredibly surprised if you go dry!! these are bottles that i want to open and enjoy with others.

We are already at Quorum with 2 of us confirmed.

Attendees: (this is capped at 10)
  1. Harry H
  2. Julian W
  3. Alex B (Maybe/No but could change)
  4. Martin C
  5. Mike M
  6. Neil C
  7. Tom A
  8. Ian J (evening only)
  9. Ben P (evening only)
Current draft of the placemats

Hell yes.

I’m happy for there to be two events in this week. If others much prefer that there be only one, then the event on Tuesday 9th April will be postponed.

Harry - I've now got to go to a funeral that morning. I'm still coming but won't be there by 1230. Hopefully not much later, but probably makes sense for me to order my lunch when I get there.

I remain sorrowful about my inability to attend but it’s bad form to walk out of a court hearing to go to a tappit hen tasting.

Completely understand. i would think that we would be easting around 1:30pm, with all of the opening and decanting to be done first.

so looking at bottle lineup,

DM i'm debating between a Taylor's Special Wood Port Vintage Character, or 2007 Portal Grande Reserva Douro red wine.

2 Tappit Hen's, Dow 1977 and Warre 1977, plus maybe a Warre 1975.

Drink up leaker's (this is still to be added too)

Harry has asked me to assemble the food order, for which you might welcome a link to the food menu. You know what to do; do it.

Lunch:
• Crab;
• Beyond Meat Burger;
• Welsh rarebit.

Dinner:
• Soup of day;
• Sirloin steak, blue, + skinny fries, + carrots;
• Bramdean Pudding.

(Everybody has been pinged by WhatsApp.)

For placemat purposes, how many ways are these being split? And do you have a preferred sub-labelling, perhaps of the form “Ship’s” and “Straight”?

DM is to go into 2 magnum decanters

TH to be split into Sandeman tawny bottle, Straight and Ship's with hopefully 650 to 700 ml in each, the same setup for each Tappit Hen. I'm thinking of splitting the group into 2 maybe 3 groups for the Tappit Hen's only. we need to have ideally 4 to 5 rounds over time, but not small samples each time. maybe i need to do the same TH ie Dow 1977 for each group. i don't have a preferred sub-labelling but think they should be clear.

Then the leaker bottles will just be shared around as people see fit.

Important: anybody bringing a decanter for this experiment, please ensure that it is clean and fresh. If it hasn’t been used in the last two-ish weeks, please re-rinse by filling with very hot water, and then dry, perhaps in sun and wind. Must be very dry, so do this task before the last moment.

My prior is that decanter shape matters little to not-at-all. If that is correct, or even just not wholly wrong, then the results could be swamped by small differences in decanter freshness. Hence they must all be super-fresh.

Apologies but I will now be tied up with a new business proposal and so, won’t be able to attend the lunchtime part of this tasting but should still be able to make the evening if that can be accommodated? Assuming so, I will have my new usual:

Welsh Rarebit
Steak (M/R) fries and carrots with peppercorn sauce
Dessert TBD on the night

Thanks

My arrival time for the afternoon is subject to getting away from a funeral in Gravesend and then driving into London, so will order something when I get there - hopefully mid-afternoon. Could someone please pour for me and I’ll catch up on arrival…

For evening I’ll have the Rarebit, followed by Sausage & Mash (large).
