90% opaque red juice

Nose strongly redolent of South African plums and star anise.

Palate has plums and chocolate and then a little nutmeg and a little orange marmalade warmth at finish.

Very pleasant drinking.

SFE estates, recorked. QH at a guess.

+ 48 hours: less interesting than it was when first opened. Not, I infer, one for the very long haul.

I am intrigued by the reference to South African plums. I’ve never really taken much notice of what plums taste like when visiting South Africa. How are they different from, say, the plums from my neighbour’s garden?

(Reading this before I post, I am aware that this could be interpreted as me being a bit snarky. I’m not; I am genuinely interested. After all, I am the person who has held a cherry tasting with some of our Seattle-based members the day after discussing whether a Port tasted of cherry, black cherry, red cherry or (as I opined) Rainer White Cherry.)

What Ho. No snarkiness detected… South African plums are those largely spherical imported ones that you use primarily for cooking. They are a different variety to the more teardrop shaped fruits commonly grown and sold in the UK. There is a note, deriving from the fairly robust skins I think, that is unique to them.
